Gurudwara Shri Sisganj Sahib
Gurudwara Sri Sisganj Sahib is situated at the famous Chandni Chowk area in Delhi. It is among the 9 chronological gurudwara's in Delhi. It was first developed in 1783 by popular Baghel Singh to duly honor the martyrdom spot of the 9th Guru i.e. Guru Tej Bahadur. Gurudwara Sri Sisganj Sahib actually marks the spot where Guru Gobind Singh was beheaded. Mughal Emperor ordered his generals to behead Guru Tej Bahadur on 11th November, 1675 and the reason being Guru's refusal to convert to Islam. It must be noted that before the dead body of Guru Tej Bahadur could be exposed to full public view, the dead body was actually stolen by Lakhi Shah Vanjara (one of his avid devotee). He stole the dead body in the darkness of night.
According to some narrations Lakhi Shah Vanjara burnt his own home to cremate the dead body of Guru Tej Bahadur. It must be kept in mind that this spot is also noticeable by another Gurudwara, the famous Gurudwara Rakabganj Sahib. Afterwards, the severed head of Guru Tej Bahadur was send to Anandpur Sahib. The head was brought by Bhai Jaitha who was a keen follower of Guru Tej Bahadur. The head was duly cremated by Guru Tej Bahadur's son, Gobind Rai,who later became Guru Gobind Singh, the last and tenth Guru of Sikhs.
History
The current Gurudwara structure was made in 1930. The branch of tree below which Guru Tej Bahadur was beheaded is still preserved here. Moreover, the well from which the Guru took bath in the jail is also there. Also standing close to Gurdwara is the popular Kotwali, where Guru was incarcerated and his devotees were tortured. On 12th March 1783, famous Sikh army leader Baghel Singh marched into the capital along with his full troops. He took control of Diwani-Am and Mughal ruler Shah Alam II actually made an agreement with Baghel Singh to develop gurdwaras on Sikh ancient sites in the capital and collect 6 annas in a rupee of all the tax duties in Delhi. Gurudwara Sri Sisganj Sahib was one of the monuments built by him within the span of just eight months.
However, owing to unstable political climate in the approaching century, the site changed between being a gurudwara and a mosque. The site actually became an argument between two communities and legal litigation followed in the court. Ultimately, after extended legal ligation, Privy Council ruled the judgment in the favor of Sikhs and the current structure was introduced in 1930. Moreover, gold guilds were added in the structure. The police station was given to Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee in 2000.
