Gurudwara Patal Puri Sahib Ropar
Gurudwara Patal Puri is situated at Kiratpur in Ropar district on the banks of river Sutlej, 10 km south of Anandpur and about 30 km north of Rupnagar city. It is located right on the Nangal-Rupnagar-Chandigarh road. It has been built across the railway tracks on the river bank and is the spot where many Sikhs bring ashes of their departed beloveds for immersing them in the sacred River Sutlej, where the ashes of Guru Hargobind, Guru Har Rai and Guru Harkrishan were also immersed.
The Gurudwara is spread over a large plot of land about 1km square, housing a large darbar sahib with a spacious langar hall nearby. The Gurudwara is also equipped with facilities for visiting pilgrims and a footbridge to connect the devotees to the bank of the river. Apart from the facilities for shower, toilet etc adequate car parking space is also provided in the Gurudwara grounds. While the Gurudwara main entrance is from behind the main building, the living rooms are located to the right of the building.
History
The sixth Guru of Sikhism Shri Guru Hargobind was cremated here in 1644 while the Seventh Holy Guru Har Rai had his cremation here in 1661. The Holy ashes of Guru Harkrishan were brought here from Delhi and were immersed in the river Sutlej in 1664.
In 1675, Guru Gobind Singh received the tragic news that his father the Eighth Sikh Guru Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed in Delhi and a devotee Bhai Jaita had brought Guruji's head from Delhi. Guru Gobind Singh, who was only 9 at that time, traveled to Anandpur Sahib for performing the cremation of his father's head there.
Kiratpur Sahib is the location where the sixth Guru Sri Hargobind Sahib had lived, while it is here the seventh and eighth Gurus were born and brought up. The Punjab Government has raised a pillar here and inscribing quotations from Guru Gobind Singh describing the unique martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. The area is also known for its importance with legends conveying that a Muslim saint Pir Buddan Shah had live a very long life here for about 800 years.
How To Reach
The Gurudwara situated in Kiratpur in District Ropar is reachable by 30 km travel from Rupnagar City.
By Air
Chandigarh Airport is the nearest about 60 kilometers from Rupnagar, taking 1.5-2 hours journey to reach this place. There are daily flights from Delhi to Chandigarh and taxi services are available at the airport to reach Rupnagar.
By Train
There is regular train service between Delhi and Rupnagar in the Delhi-Ambala-Una railway route and the train travel would take about 6 hours.
By Road
The Ropar town which is also the district headquarters, lies 42 kilometers from Chandigarh and is well connected by road through NH-21. The road distance is about 290 km from Delhi through highway and for one to reach Rupnagar one should take NH-1 from Delhi to Ambala City via Panipat, Karnal and Kurukshetra for reaching Chandigarh and then proceed along NH-21 to reach Rupnagar via Kharar, Kurali.
