Gurudwara Alamgir
Gurudwara Alamgir, also known as Gurudwara Shri Manji Sahib, is situated in the Alamgir village in Ludhiana district. It is one of the most famous sightseeing attractions in the city. Besides the Gurudwara lies a holy tank known as 'TirSar' which is believed to cure the devotees bathing in it. The Sikhs believe that the sacred water of the tank gives them 'mukti' which means freedom from all their troubles.
History
Guru Gobind Singh Ji reached Alamgir disguised as Pi roof Uchch (Muslim Saint) in a palanquin which was carried by BhaiDaya Singh, Dharam Singh and Man Singh and two Afghan brothers Ghani Khan and Nabi Khan. They stayed here for few days. Guru Ji asked an old lady for some water and she replied that the place comprised of ruins and he would not find any water. She added that there was a well far away but no one lived nearby as the well was inhabited by a large python. Guru Ji shot the python with and arrow and gave it 'Mukti' (freedom from curse). When the people nearby went to fetch water, they saw that the creature had bled profusely contaminating the well water. Guru Ji then shot another arrow at the ground and a spring appeared there.
Architecture
The gateway of the Gurudwara is four storied and atop it lays a small lotus dome. After a vast paved courtyard is a central building known as 'Divan hall' and is surrounded by verandah all around. Adjoining it is 'Prakash Asthan' which is in the basement and it represents the original site of Manji Sahib. A three storied dome-shaped tower is constructed over the prakashasthan. There are arrangements made in the form of residential rooms for staff and pilgrims. The dining hall accommodates around two thousand devotees at a time. The tank adjacent to the Gurudwara is 63 metre square and is known as TirSar.
Celebration
A popular fair is held here every year in the month of December.
