Sikh Gurudwara Secunderabad
Sikh Gurudwara at Secunderabad is situated at St. Mary's road there. It is an age old Gurudwara in Hyderabad, ably managed by the Prabhandak Committees of Gurudwara Saheb, Secunderabad.
Any pure place where Guru Granth Sahib is placed with respect is a Gurudwara according to Sikh faith, it need not even have a temple like building, even a small room in a home which is held with reverence will make a good Gurudwara.
Sikhs of Secunderabad area patronize this Gurudwara, while time and again they celebrate the Birthday of Sri Guru Nanakji, every year in a grand manner, with many religious discourses called Kirtan Darbars and united action of charitable deeds, which are organized jointly by the Prabhandak Committees of Gurudwara Saheb Secunderabad and Gurudwara Sri Guru Sing Sabha of Afzalgunj.
Gurudwara Architecture in General
Different from the temples and other places of worship with other religious faiths, Gurudwara buildings do not follow any particular pattern of architectural design. The only requirements is the installation of the Guru Granth Sahib, which shall be under a canopy or over a canopied seat, normally kept in a pedestal higher than the floor level where the devotees sit. A tall Sikh pennant flag at the top of the building will further accomplish the requirement.
The Gurudwara Saheb constructed nowadays are mostly imitating the Harmandir Sahib pattern at Amritsar, which is a combination of Indo-Persian and Sikh architecture. Almost all of them have square halls, positioned on a higher plinth, with entrances built on all the four sides. These Gurudwaras also have the sanctums in square or octagonal domed form usually in the centre. Those constructed in still recent times have bigger ventilated halls for accommodating largergatherings, on one end while the sanctum is on the other end. The sanctum is so positioned that there will be space for rendering circumambulation. Sometimes, additional verandah space is also constructed to meet the additional demand. The model for the dome has always been the ribbed lotus, over which an ornamental pinnacle decoration is made. Exteriors will be glorified with arched copings, solid dome lets and kiosks.
