Gurdwara Patalpuri
Gurudwara Patalpuri Sahib is built in Kiratpur Sahib Town in Rupnagar district. The gurudwara holds immense importance in the lives of the Sikh community as it is associated with the Sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji established Kiratpur Sahib on the banks of Sutlej River in 1627 after he purchased the land through his son Baba Gurditta from Raja of Kehloor.
There are other important Gurudwaras in the town, chief among them is Gurudwara Charan Kamal which honors the remembrance of a meeting between the First Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev and Pir Buddan Shah.
History
Gurudwara Patalpuri Sahib in Kiratpur Sahib Town is located on the left bank of the Sutlej River. As per historical recordings, when the Sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji felt his end drawing nearer, he chose Guru Har Rai as his successor and stayed in a hut known as Patalpuri. That site is where Gurudwara Patalpuri Sahib has been built upon. Guru Ji spent his last day in meditation and passed away on 28th February 1644. His body was cremated there itself among his bereaved followers.
On 6 October 1661, the Seventh Guru, Guru Har Rai took his last breathe and was cremated here only. His successor, Guru Harkrishan, the Eight Guru left for heavenly abode on 30 March 1664 in Delhi. His ashes were brought to Kiratpur and immersed in the Sutlej.
Many Sikhs now travel from far away to immerse the ashes of their beloved ones on the same site on the banks of River Sutlej.
Architecture and Covered Area
The Gurudwara is built close to the left bank of river Sutlej on a 1sq km plot. There is a Darbar Sahib with the Langar hall close by. Devotees enter the main entrance of the Gurudwara from behind the main building and to its right are the living quarters and gardens. There is a Sarovar in vicinity. To access the immersion point, a small iron footbridge is constructed on the bank of the river.
Location and its Surroundings
Close to this famed Gurudwara, a dargah is also situated. It is a fine example of religious tolerance. People from far and wide areas come to visit Baba Budhan Shah Ji’s dargah. Several temples like Rama Mandir, Shiv Mandir and Bhatukeshwar Durga Mandir are also located in the vicinity.
Celebrations
Numerous Sikh festivals such as the Baisakhi that mostly falls on the 13th or the 14th April, Guru Nanak’s birthday in November and other Guru Ji's birthdays, the martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur and many more are celebrated here.
