Gurudwara Kandh Sahib
The famous Gurudwara Sri Kandh Sahib situated in Batala Town’s center in the District Gurdaspur, Punjab has a story behind it. The Guruji came to this place to get married to Bibi Sulakhni, there an old lady advised Guru Nanak Ji to get up from the place where he was sitting as the wall behind him is likely to fall at any time and smilingly Guruji replied that the wall is very strong and would never fall and would remain there for years to come as a memory of their marriage. The same has become true and even today, it is a site of great attraction for the visitors visiting this place.
More Description
The name Gurudwara Sri Kandh Sahib has been derived from Kachchi Kandh meaning a muddy wall and according to local customs, Guruji was standing by its side during his marriage. The wall is standing steady and strong even today.
In memory of this great wall, the devotees built a platform near the wall plastered it considerably and covered it with glass near Granth Sahib in the ground floor. The Private priests were taking care of the wall’s maintenance work, however, in 1950, a Seva Committee of the Gurudwara Kandh Sahib took over and a foundation was laid in Dec 1956. The wall is gently placed on a marble compound of 2 meters away from the street lines and a square sanctum in the middle is discreetly seen. There is a room in the second floor where nonstop reading of Granth Sahib is done and the sanctum is also covered with white glazed tiles and is well adorned with gold plated pinnacle and finial which is in an umbrella shape. Wonderful decorations indeed attract visitors and the kiosks on the sides are a scene never to be missed.
