Gurdwara Amb Sahib
Amb in Punjabi means mango. Gurudwara Amb Sahib is a holy place located at Mohali, a shrine which is blessed by the Sikh Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji.
History
Gurudwara Amb Sahib is the holy shrine which is established at Mohali city of Punjab and is just few metres far from Gurdwara Sant Mandal Angitha Sahib, the most blessed spot which is stepped by Guru Sri Har Rai Sahib. This is the place which made Gursikhs feel contended by the Guruji’s blessings, and also a place where Amb (mango in Punjabi) tree is planted by the Guruji.
Bhai Kuram Singh, a tenant of the Lambian village, moved to Amritsar to have a glance of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It was the season of mangoes, when people arriving with many mangoes to the court of the great Guru Arjun Dev Ji, to offer mangoes to him. But, Bhai Kuram Singh felt bad about himself as he came to visit guru bare-handed, though the place from where he arrived has loads of mangoes, and he was not able to get a single mango to his respectful Guru and neither had he thought about getting any mangoes.
When darbar ended, the mangoes were circulated among these devotees as Parshad and guruji asked them to eat. All the devotees did as instructed by their Guru. Kuram Singh was the only person who did not eat the mango given to him, instead he offered the same mango to the guru the very next morning. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji asked Bhai Kuram ji – This mango was given to him as a prashad, but why is he offering the same here? Bhai Kuram Singh bowed before the Guru and replied Almighty, I came from the city where large numbers of mangoes are grown, but was not able to bring a single mango as offering to you, so I want to give this mango as an offering. Guru Ji said—it is not necessary, eat the fruit that is given to you as a prashad, and will consider your offerings one day for sure. After few years, Guruji passed away. Keeping this promise in mind, made by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, his great grandson Sri Guru Har Rai Ji searched for Bhai Kuram Singh Ji, in order to receive the offerings from him. Thus, one fine day, Guru Sri Har Rai came to know that Bhai Kuram Ji was performing a deep meditation under a mango tree. Guru Ji came close to Bhai Kuram Singh, woke him from meditation and ordered him to fulfil the promise of Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji (his great grandfather). He also gave him a mango, as he has come to that place on behalf of Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji. To this, Bhai Kuram Ji replied with humbleness that, he was unable to offer mangoes as it was not a season of mangoes.
After listening Bhai Kuram Ji's words, Guru Har Rai Ji told him to look above and observe the mangoes hanging around the tree in large numbers, under which he was meditating. Bhai Kuram Ji was surprised to see the tree filled with ripe mango fruits! He felt very happy, bent and touched Guru Ji’s feet with tears. Guru Ji then told him to offer some mangoes to the sangat. As per Guru Ji’s order, Bhai Kuram Singh gave few mangoes to the respectful Guru and the entire sangat.
Architecture and Covered Area
Usually, there is no set architectural scheme followed in Gurudwaras. The only aspect on which a lot of focus is laid upon is the placing of the Holy Book, the Guru Granth Sahib. This book is kept under a canopy on a raised platform. The same pattern can be witnessed at Gurudwara Amb Sahib. An eclectic blend of Persian and Sikh architectural style reflects in its construction.
