Brief Description
Dharwad pedha is a most popular sweet dish in the state of Karnataka, India. Its name is derived from Dharwad city which is located in Karnataka and has a history of around 175 years. Dharwad Pedha was historically originated by Thakur family. In the early 19th Century, Thakur family migrated from Unnao in Uttar Pradesh to Dharwad because of dreaded plague which was broke out there. Ram Ratan Singh Thakur who was the first generation sweet maker started making ‘pedhas’ with the help of meager funds and sell them. After sometime it became popular.

- sugar : 1 cup
- cup milk : 1/2
- tsp – ghee : 3-4
- cardamom powder : 1/2 tsp
How to make Dharwad Pedha
- Take a deep pan and add 1-2 tsp of ghee in it. Add flour and cook it for about 3-4 minutes on average heat till it smells good.
- Add sugar according to your taste and mix it well with the flour.
- Add milk and stir it continuously until it leaves the bottom and forms a single mass.
- Now grease a plate or tray with ghee.
- Take out the mixture into the tray and allow it to cool a little. Then grease your hand with ghee and make small balls of this mixture and keep it aside.
- Now take another plate and spread powdered sugar or cane sugar on it and roll the balls so that it looks as if the balls are coated with sugar. Store it in an air tight container and for at least 1 month it can be stored.
Some Useful Tips
When the mawa is well browned then the pedha will taste like Kandi pedha. Allow it to cook on a low flame otherwise it may burn. If the mixture is burned then you have to start it from the beginning. Instead of powdered sugar use granulated sugar then in kandi pedha you will feel the sugar texture.
