Ethakka Appam
Brief Description
There are many plantain recipes available in Kerala cuisine. Among them Ethakappam/ Pazham Pori or Plantain fritter is one of the famous and most liked snack of keralites. It is prepared by dipping the plantain slices in sweetened flour and then frying it in oil. This snack is available everywhere in kerala and is referred as common street item and it is mostly sold in trains. This snack is generally prepared in most of the homes and served with coffee or tea. It is very delicious snack and can be prepared very easily.
Time required to prepare 10-15 minutes Time required to cook 20-30 minutes Serves 4 Ingredients For Ethakka Appam
- Ripened Banana /Nendrapazham : 1 large
- All Purpose Flour /Maida : 3/4 cup
- Rice flour : 3 tbsp
- Milk : 2 tsp
- Turmeric powder : a pinch
- Sugar : 2 tsp (adjust accordingly to the sweetness of plantain)
- Salt : a pinch (just to adjust the sweetness)
- Cardamom : 2 pods (Crushed , optional)
- Baking Powder : a pinch (optional)
- Oil for frying
How to make Ethakka Appam
- Remove the banana skin and cut it into 2 pieces. Now take one piece and cut it into thin slices.
- Add the remaining ingredients in it except the oil and then add adequate quantity of water in it and mix it well to make a smooth batter.
- Take a frying pan and heat oil in it.
- Now take the banana pieces and nicely dip it into the batter and then place them in the frying pan.
- Allow the banana to fry till it becomes golden brown in color and turn crispy and then drain it in tissue paper.
- Serve it along with a cup of coffee or tea and enjoy it.
