Water as an element is considered important and sacred by all the people, while it is an important and essential requirement for human living, which is available for humanity in many natural points of origin.

Ancient times, rivers and oceans are considered sacred, because they satisfied the basic needs of one, whether it is to sustain life as a drinking water, or as big seas to undertake vovages to distant lands. However, in a land like India, water was an important matter for religious and ritualistic purposes.

Water stored in large quantities, in a fixed area are considered Lakes, and India has a number of Lakes in every part of the country, on a quick unofficial count they are 180 are more taking into account of all recognized Lakes in the country.


Famous lakes of India

Some lakes in India are rather famous, drawing large number of people to visit them, for their largeness, apart from their specific purposes of City water supply through transportation. We may go through some of them here:

HussainSagar Lake of Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh strikes one’s attention when one thinks of Lakes in India.  This lake was built by HazratHussain Shah Wali in the year 1562AD,  covering 5.7 square km area, mainly to cater the needs of agriculture and farming, now amazing the visitor with a grand monolith Statue of Gautam Buddha standing in its expansive water surface.

Narayan SarovarLake  atBhuj in Gujarat State, is considered as a Holy Lake for Hindus, with the other four lakes Manasarovar in Tibet, Pushkar in Rajasthan, Bhubaneshwar in Orissa and Pampa in Karnataka,  which is considered a blessing of Lord Vishnu as per legends.
Dal Lake at Srinagar is a Jewel in the crown of Kashmir, covering 18 square km area, its shore line adorned with the Mughal era gardens, house boats, parks and hotels, all  lining up to a distance of 15.5 km , is another wonderful Lake in India.

Nainital Lake is another famous lake in Kumaon Hills ofUttarkhand, famous for its beauty as well as puranic importance, with its counter parts in the Hills, Sattal Lake, Bhimtal Lake and Naukuchyatal Lake, drawing large number of tourists throughout the year.


Main purpose of Lakes

Every State in India has impressive lakes, such as Tamilnadu having Kodaikanal, Ooty and Yercaud lakes, for entertainment besides historical Veeranam  Lake for drinking water supply, Karnataka and Kerala having beautiful lakes for entertainment and  many other lakes throughout the country most of them maintained for irrigational purposes.
