Gujarat Sardar Sarovar Dam
Sardar Sarovar Dam is one of the largest dams build on the Narmada River. It is the part of the Narmada Valley Project which is concerned with the construction of different multipurpose dams to be built on the Narmada River. The construction of the dam began in 1979 with an aim to provide excellent irrigation facilities and also hydroelectric power to the people of Gujarat. Being the largest dam, it has the height of 163 meters while it provides irrigation services to an area of about 18000 kilometer square. Kutch and Saurashtra are the two areas where the irrigation services are provided through this dam. The dam is also a source to generate electricity with six francis pump turbines.

Sardar Sarovar Dam is a project which is always under controversies owing to its height as well as the budget estimate of this project. According to the initial proposal, the height of the dam was to be 260 feet but then it was later required to increase the height. The Supreme Court also gave the permission to increase the height to 289 feet but still there were many controversies that persist during the construction of Sardar Sarovar Dam. But as the dam offered innumerable benefits to the state and to the people, therefore the permission to construct the dam was given irrespective of the high cost that was involved in the Sardar Sarovar Dam project.
