Tamil Nadu Veeranam Lake
Veeranam Lake is located 14 kilometers of Chidambaram in Cuddalore district. The lake is situated some 235 kilometers from Chennai and is one of the water reservoirs from where drinking water is supplied to Chennai. This lake of Tamil Nadu is fed by Vadavar River.
This lake is considered to a second big lake of Tamil Nadu and it is used in supplying drinking water to Chennai. It is also a major source of Agriculture water for the city of Cuddalore. This lake also finds mention in the history of the Chola Kings.
History
Veeranam Lake is a lake which was built by the Chola Kings and is a main reservoir which meets the drinking water requirements of Chennai city. It gets water from the Cauvery River. It is found in Senthathope which is some 230 kilometers south of Chennai. The lake can hold up to 1,465 mcft of water. The source of the lake can be found on the banks of the Veera Narayanar Lake.
Attractions
Thillaikaliamman Temple: This quaint temple is situated northern end of the town. Kopperunjingan was a king who ruled the town between AD 1229 and 1278. It was he who got the temple built. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. Story says that the anger of Goddess Kali's had not subsided even after killing Tarakasura. It was for this reason that Lord Nataraja did the Tandava dance to control her anger. It is said that tourists who visit the city should also pay a visit to Thillaikaliamman temple.

Pichavaram: It is a seaside resort which has backwaters and mangroves. It is situated some 15 kilometers east of Chidambaram. It is also a haven for many migratory birds.
Vaitheeswaran koil: You can consult the famous Nadi astrologers in a nearby village 25 kilometers from here.
Tiruvakkarai: It is considered to be the country's first national fossil wood park.
Silver Beach: It is a beach in Devanampattinam and is located in the eastern side of Cuddalore. It is a beach which is frequented by many travelers. Here you can enjoy a number of activities including horse riding and boating. The beach also has a boat house and a children's play area. It is the second longest beach on the Coromandel Coast. It is considered to be one of the longest sea beaches in Asia.
Bhuvaraha Swami Temple: It is amongst the many self created temples of Swayam Vyaktakshetras. It is found in Srimushnam. The temple has an image of the Varaha Avatar. It also has a beautiful Mandapam known as the Purushasukara Mandapam with lots of beautiful carvings of warriors on elephants and horses.
How To Reach
If you wish to visit this beautiful lake by air, the nearest airport is the Coimbatore International Airport. It is some kilometers from the main city. This airport meets the requirements of both domestic and international flights. You can see that the airport is well connected to the country with regular arrival and departures of flights from major cities.
If you are planning to visit the lake by rail then it is well connected with all of the major cities in the country with a strong network of railways. You will find many broad gauge trains crisscrossing the city of Coimbatore and connecting it to the rest of the country. For your information it was in the year 1852 that the first rail service was started in the city of Coimbatore and ever since they have been spanning the network of the city.
