Andhra Pradesh Pulicat Lake
This lake is well surrounded by the coconut forest and amazing scenic looks.It is said that some muslim families, who migrated from Mecca in 13th century, selected this place and made their residence around the lake. The lake is the only witness of having the residences around it since 7 centuries. Some sculptures, showing the migration of Muslim families from Arab to India, are available there. This lake is the major source of revenue in accordance with tourism. Presently, Pulicate Lake is counted under famous lakes of the country due to the water consistency and allied amenities required by a visitor.
History
It is evident from history that during 13th century some Muslim families migrated from Arab to India. They reached this location by four large boats and stayed here only. Later the Arab Muslims spread in the area and their generations increased. Successors of these families are still residing in this area. In the official records, the description of Arab Muslims is also endorsed. Portuguese also explored and selected this area. A church was also built by them during the year 1515. Dutch also inspired from this area and shifted in large ships. Dutch made their residences at Karimnal village and since then the area (shore line) called Coramandal. Though, the expansion and prosperity of Dutch was even more than any community came here from outside. Dutch also build a fort here to make further business activities from British East India Company. Various tombs made by Dutch are now preserved by ASI, a large cemetery, Church are also there.
Flora and Faunna
Flora
This lake is well supported with beautiful sights around it. As far as biological diversity is concerned, large varieties of fish species are found inside the lake. The species that are found in this lake are most often of marine origin. In the depth of lake, Mullets and Catfish are found in large numbers. Maximum portion of this lake is in the area of Tamil Nadu and remaining portion is in Andhra Pradesh. This lake is like a nursery of different types of species. From this lake, more than eleven hundred tones of crabs and fishes are harvested annually according to the available statistics.
Faunna
Lake, being shallow in nature, is one of the most convenient stopovers for migratory bird species. More than 12 species for shorebirds which are migratory in nature, stay here for a long time as atmosphere and conditions are better for them. This is known as third most soothing and convenient place for migratory bird species. A bird sanctuary is also established here only due to this reason. The sanctuary is spread in an area of 66 kilometers. More than one hundred and fifteen bird species are found in this sanctuary. This sanctuary is spread in two states. The portion of lagoon falls in the area of Tamilnadu is spread in 23 sqml area.
How to Reach
By Road : This lake is located at a small distance from Chennai and touches the border of Andhra Pradesh. The distance is not more that 80 kilometers from Chennai. One has to follow national highway No 5 to visit this lake and sanctuary. Another nearby place Sullarpet is located at a distance of just 10 kilometers from this place. Tourist cars are available on a rent of rupees two thousand for return journey also.
By Rail : Nearest railway station is Chennai to reach this place. All the major trains are connected to this station. From railway station, various road transport means are available to reach this area.
By Air : Chennai International Airport is the nearest Airport to access this lake and sanctuary. Frequent bus services and tourist cabs are available from airport.The road journey involves hardly sixty minutes reaching this lake.
