Tamil Nadu Kaliveli Lake
Kaliveli Lake is located in the Viluppuram District of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is a beautiful coastal lake which is famous for the migratory birds. The lake is located near Bay of Bengal and lies ten kilometers to the North of Auroville and sixteen kilometers north of Pondicherry. The seasonal wet land of Kaliveli has a slope from freshwater to brackish water. This is the reason it forms an important feeding as well as breeding ground for many species of the migratory birds. IUC has declared the lake to be a wetland that has both national as well as International importance as it is one of the largest wetlands found in Peninsular India. The wetland is currently having a threat from infringement from wildlife poaching, agricultural fields, loss of forests and increase in the commercial farming of the prawns.
Attractions and Flora and Fauna
The Kaliveli lake has an importance of its own as it is the largest wetlands in Indian and also a semi-permanent water body. The banks of the lake have a large collection of Flora and fauna that has great ecological significance. It is a main wintering ground for resident as well as the migratory birds. The water paddy fields have led to the reduction of the water spread area of the lake these days.
The main attraction of the lake is the migratory birds. The migratory birds that breed in the northern part of Eurasia known as Palaearctic come here to spend their winters. This species of the migratory birds start arriving here in the months of July and August and start moving away in March and april each year. Those who want to look and identify the migratory birds can have a good time here. The other attraction of the place is the remains of the Allamparwa fort that are found on the coast next to the North Channel to the Kaliveli lake and is around thirty five kilometers away from Pondicherry.
