Tamil Nadu Singanallur Lake
This beautiful and picturesque lake is found in the Singanallur region of Coimbatore. It is one of the most famous picnic spots amongst the tourists and also the locals because of the wide variety of flora and fauna found near the lake. The area around the Lake is more famous as a bird watcher’s paradise as many different species of birds can be seen flocking this beautiful and picturesque lake. If luck is on your side and you come at the right time you will be able to spot 100 different species of birds in the region.
The lake is a bustle of activity during spring time as many tourists and locals come to this beautiful spot as a wide variety of birds can be spotted near the Lake.
History
Singanallur is historically considered to be as old as Coimbatore. This quaint and otherwise peaceful town was captured by the Mysore Kings in 1684-85 due to its military importance in those days. The city of Valialore is more close to Singanallur and more ancient as it was considered to be an important trading center with the Roman Empire as many Roman coins which were dug up here, reveal. The city was ruled by a Chieftain of Pallia Vellalars which has been inscribed on the stone inscriptions found here which belong to the last Sangam Age.
Attractions
Black Thunder, Coimbatore: This is a famous amusement and theme-based park located in Mettupalayam. It is situated some 40 kilometers from the city of Coimbatore. The amusement park is sprawled over an area of about 75 acres. It is huge as well as spacious having as many as 49 thrilling and fun filled rides.
Brookefields Mall, Coimbatore: It is one of the biggest shopping mall in Coimbatore. It is located on the Brooke bond Road. It was opened in 2009 and is one of the most visited malls in the city.
Kovai Kuttralam, Coimbatore: It is a very beautiful and awesome picnic spots because of its cascading waterfall that owes its birth to the beautiful Siruvani Hills. Its hills are a part of the Western Ghats that are towards the western side of Coimbatore. You can reach this picnic spot from Coimbatore and is at a distance of 35 km from the city.
Marudhamalai, Coimbatore: This is a temple which is dedicated to the Hindu God Murugan. It is situated atop a hill and is also known as the Marudhamalai Hill. It was considered to be a property of the Gounder Kings of Kongu Vettuva in ancient times. This temple has been accorded second in importance when compared with the Arupadaiveedu temple which is another temple and dedicated to Lord Murugan.
How To Reach
If you wish to visit this beautiful lake by air, the nearest airport is the Coimbatore International Airport and is situated in Peelamedu. It is some 11 kilometers from the main city. You can also find an air base at Sulur. This airport meets the requirements of both domestic and international flights. You can see that the airport is well connected to the country with regular arrival and departures of flights from major cities.
If you are planning to visit the lake by rail then it is well connected with all of the major cities in the country with a strong network of railways. You will find many broad gauge trains crisscrossing the city of Coimbatore and connecting it to the rest of the country. For your information it was in the year 1852 that the first rail service was started in the city of Coimbatore and ever since they have been spanning the network of the city.
