Himachal Pradesh Prashar Lake
Located about 49 kms from Mandi, Prashar Lake is a popular place. It is positioned in the north of Mandi in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The most famous attraction close to this place is a pagoda style temple with three storeys. This temple was built in the honour of Sage Parashar. This high altitude lake is situated at a height of 2730 m above the level of the sea. This holy lake holds great religious significance as it is believed that Sage Prashar used this place for meditation. The azure blue waters of this lake mesmerises the visitors coming here. Nestled amidst the snow capped mountains, via Drang one can reach this lake. Moreover, the view of River Beas from the mountains also adds to the attraction.
In the thirteenth century, this temple was built and as the legend goes, from a single tree. It was built by a baby. There is a floating island in the lake and its depth is still uncertain as the divers are still not able to fathom its actual depth.
History
Cedat trees at its great height surround this lake. The stunned silence offer ultimate calm and peace to the visitors. As per mythology goes, Pandawas formed this lake. This was when Pandawas were on their way after the battle of Mahabharata came to an end with Deity Kanrunag. On this basis, this valley is referred to Kamru Valley. It is believed that the Deity and Dev Kanrunag loved the attraction and isolation of this place and they decide to spend their rest of their life in this picturesque place. The second eldest brother Bheemsen formed this lake by pushing his elbow on the mountain’s peak. This lake is oval shaped and the local people believe this story. Till today, the depth of this lake is unknown. During storms, sometimes even 30 meter high cedar trees fall in the lake and drown completely.
Today, people from different faiths visit this place. They throw silver coins, gold and money into this lake. Except for winter months, visitors can visit this lake at any time of the year. From December to March, the place is not accessible.
Now with increased faith and visitors there are few hotels available with basic facilities with reasonable price. 03 hrs (6 km) trek from Rohanda to Kanrunag Lake.
Attractions
Close to Parashar Lake, there are several attractions that make the place worth visiting. Besides nature’s bounty at its best, the place is perfect for a peaceful vacation. It is located close to Mandi. Travellers can stay there and visit this lake. Another major attraction is Pandoh Dam that is situated about 16 kms from Mandi. Here, Pandoh Lake can also be visited.
There is an ancient temple called Shikhari Devi that is about 15 kilometres away from Janjheli. This temple is located amidst natural landscapes.
Picnics can be enjoyed at Barot that is located about 33 kms away from Mandi. Ropeway and trout fishing are the major attractions of this place.
Close to this destination, there is another popular attraction known as Chidi which is a small hamlet nestled amidst mighty mountains. This place is famous for apple orchards and breathtaking beauty overwhelms the visitors coming here. This place is also famous for its several ancient temples.
At a mighty height of 3,334 metres above the level of the sea, trekkers take rest at Kamru Nag Lake. From Rohanda, the trek begins that is about 40 kilometres away from Sundernagar.
How to Reach
To reach this picturesque destination, people can reach Mandi first from where this place is just 46 kms away. It takes about three hours to reach this lake as it is situated at a great height. To reach Mandi, trains as mode of transportation can be used where Kiratpur is the nearest railway station. Similarly, Bhunar located in Kullu is the nearest airport to reach this lake. Several buses, coaches and taxis ply from Delhi and Chandigarh.
