Meghalaya Umiam Lake

History
The history of Omiam Lake is well known and recorded. It was created by constructing dams on the Umiam River in the early 1965. This dam is also memorable because it is the very fisrt Hydel project dam in the North-East region. Though it is an artificial reservoir for the Hydel project, over time it has gained its own place in the ecosystem of the area. The principal catchment area is spread over 220 square kilometers and that covers the nearby Shillong. Apart from being a part of the ecosystem, the water of the lake is used for downstream agriculture, fishing and drinking water.
In short, the lake is quite capable of fulfilling a lot of needs of the local people. There are a lot of sports facilities in the lake. Along with that, all the tourist facilities are available in the lake and the adjoining area. So, there is practically nothing to worry about making a holiday plan to Umiam Lake. The development of the lake is conducted by Meghalaya Tourism Department, but it is a little unusual that the management of the lake depends and is controlled completely by Meghalaya State Electricity Board. How To Reach
As the lake is only 15 km from Shillong, you first need to reach the city of Shillong and for there, you can have to either take a taxi or rent a car to reach the lake. The nearest railhead is Guwahati. You can take a train from anywhere in the country and reach Guwahati, because this place is well connected with the rest of the country. After getting into Guwahati, you have to take a taxi or you can rent a car and reach Shillong. You can take the same cab to the lake or you can opt for another car to visit Lake Umiam.
