Uttarakhand Nainital Lake
The lake of Nainital is the lake of fresh water that is situated within the township of Nainital of the state of Uttarakhand, India and its origin is tectonic in nature. This lake is in the shape of kidney or hemispherical shaped having its outfall on its southeastern end.
The Nainital district of Uttarakhand is famous as the Lake District in India. There are total four famous lakes of the hilly region of Kumaon out of which Nainital is one of them and the other one are The Bhimtal, The Sattal and Naukuchiyatal.
History
As per the records of history it was studied that in 1839 there was an English business man who was the trader of sugar visited this place accidently while on a hunt and suddenly come across this lake of Nainital. After visiting this awesome place he decided to develop a European colony by the side of this lake. All the news papers of that time in 1841 flashed the news about the discovery of this remarkable place situated near Almora.
Attractions
Yachting facility is being provided by the boat club of Nainital on this lake. The competition of Kingfisher Yachting is held annually here in June’s third week. The Department of Tourism arranged the festival of Kumaon that spread the tradition and culture among the people at the time of October and November months in winter.
Flora and Fauna
This lake of Nainital is located in the mid of the ranges of Himalayas is very rich in the fauna and flora.There were following details regarding the specificity of the flora and fauna of the Nainital lake.
Vegetation
There were huge amount of bushes and trees grown here along that are known by their common names and botanical names that are: a) Pinus (Pine), b) Salix acmophylla (Weeping Willow), c) Rhododendron arboretum (Buruns) and Cedrus deodara (Deodar), d) Cupressus torulosa (Surai or Himalayan cypress), e) Berberis asiatica (Kilmora), f) Rosa moschata (Kunj or Musk rose), g) Rubus lasiocarpus (Hisalu), h) Platanus Orientalis (Chinar), i) Fraxinus miscrantha (Ash tree or Angu), j) Populous ciliate (Hill Pipal, sacred tree), k) Juglans regia (Akhrot or walnut), l) Aesculus indica (Pangar or Horse chestnuts), m) Quercus incana Oak (Banj) etc.
The various Aquatic Macrophytic vegetations are as follows 1) Polygonum amphibium and Polygonum hydropiper (Water pepper), 2) Polygonum glabrum, 3) PopPotamogeton crispus, 4) Potamogeton pectinatus.
Also reported here are various species of horticultural plants and medicinal flora also.
Aqua Fauna
Some special species of fishes are also available in the lake such as hill trout and mirror carp that were breed during the time of spawning in May and September months various times and also carps Mahseer were found. Mahaseer fish has two species that is Tor tor named as mahseer with red fins and Tor putitora that is mahseer with yellow fins. Also it is a food fish that has a size of about 20 to 60 cm reportedly. In this lake, also found a three species of fish Hill Trout and that are named as Schizothorax plagiostornus, Schizothorax richardsoni and Schizothorax sinuatus etc.
Fauna
In the district of Nainital, there were found about 9 animal species and 9 bird species available.
How to Reach
Kathgodam is the nearest railway station on the north-east gauze line at about distance of 35 km from the lake that has linked with the Delhi, Howrah, and Dehradun. This district is also connected with the cities via national highway like Bareilly, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Delhi, and Dehradun etc on daily basis. At about 70 km, nearest airport is situated.
