Tamil Nadu Ooty Lake
In the district of Nilgiri of Tamil Nadu state of India there is the beautiful lake named as Ooty lake that is covering the total area of about 65 acres. There is also a boat house that is situated by the side of this lake providing the boating facility to the tourists and is one of the major attraction for the tourists of Ooty.
History
In 1824 this artificial lake was constructed by the efforts of John Sullivan. The water that was coming down from the mountains in to the valley of Ooty was dammed and the formation of lake was completed. There are only 3 occasions on which this lake remains empty and that is during the breach of its bund. Initially this lake was utilized by the people for fishing by travelling on the ferries to and fro from the lake. Later on this lake reduced from its basic size and it leads to the construction of the bus stand, Lake Park and the race course. In 1973 the control and the possession of this lake was took over by the Development Corporation of Tamil Nadu (TDC) on bases of the department of the tourism so that boating facility can be provided to the tourists.
Attractions
There is the orchard of Eucalyptus trees that surrounds this awesome lake along with the railway line that travels side by side of its one shore. In the summer season there is also the provision for the boat pageantry and boat races for the period of 2 days.
This lake is in L Shape and is situated in the heart of Ooty. It is being considered as one of the best tourist place for boating and especially in summers that provided an amazing experience. A number of boat racing competitions are being organized here and the tourists as well as the local people enjoy a lot viewing these competitions and it looks as if it is one of the astonishing places of earth. This function of race competition is very well organized and planned and a large number of people gathers here near by this lake during the race competition.
Boat House
The Tamil Nadu Development Corporation (TTDC) leads to the opening of this boat house that is nearby this lake. The prime attraction of this lake is boating. There are several kinds of boats that are being provided by this boat house like the paddle boats, motor boats, row boats etc. Besides this there is also an amusement park around this lake, a mini train for children and a garden too. There is also the provision of the canteen that is being governed by TTDC and also pony riding around this lake.
How to Reach
By Rail
The nearest railway station that is available near this lake is Mettupalayam that is about 47 kms from Ooty. A number of train travels from Chennai and Coimbatore to Mettupalayam station. Conoor and Mettupalayam to the Ooty station by the toy trains. One can also hire Taxis from Mettupalayam station to Ooty and the charges are about Rs.1000.
By Road
Near about all the cities of South India are very well connected to Ooty by bus route. A number of buses are available from various cities like Bangalore charging Rs.300, Chennai charging Rs.650, Mysore charging Rs.300 and certain other cities of Kerela are connected by bus route. A number of private vehicle as well as State owned vehicle can be hired over this route. A number of tour and travel service providers offer many types of packages to the tourists for Ooty. The charges of these service providers are about Rs.4/ Km.
By Air
The nearest air port that is available from Ooty is the Coimbatore airport that is about 105 km of distance from Ooty. A number of cities of South India are connected to the airport of Coimbatore like Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Madurai. The charges of the taxis that are Pre-paid are about Rs.2500 from Coimbatore – Ooty.
