Uttarakhand Sat Tal Lake
Sattal is a lake which is found at a height of 1370 meters above sea level. The lake derives its name from the seven meandering freshwater lakes.
The lake is situated in the Mehragaon Valley which has lots of lush green oak trees and forests. It was in the British rule that this area was a popular in the in the Kumaon region as a tea plantation.
The lake is home to many visiting birds’, butterflies, insects and moths, all of which can be seen in the area. You will also be able to spot many mammals in this area, but most of them are protected due to illegal poaching. You will also be able to find many rare which include ferns, creepers, medicinal herbs and orchids. The best time to visit the lake is from March to June, and then from September to December
History
The lake is located at a distance of 3 kilometers from Bhimtal in Uttarakhand, It has many freshwater lakes. It is found at a height of 4000 feet, at the foothills of the Himalayas.
On nearing Sattal Lake, you will see the first lake which is Nal-Damyanti and is abundant in many colorful fishes. Another lake is the Panna lake which is also known as Garud lake. You will then come across three lakes: Ram, Laxman and Sita lakes. Two of the lakes have dried up. The lakes of Sattal are a home to migratory birds. The surrounding area is ideal for nature walks and butterfly watching.
Attractions
Butterfly Museum: This museum can be found in Jones Estate. It is one of the major tourist attractions of Sat Tal. It has over 2,500 species of butterflies and 1100 species of insects that are native to the Kumaoni region. It is a museum which was built by Federic Smetacek.
Methodist Ashram: It is an ashram which was built by Stanley Jones in the year 1930. He was a friend of Mahatma Gandhi. The ashram can be found at the point of entry from the Sat Tal banks. It is because it’s fine colonial architecture which makes the ashram to be a popular destination. You can also visit the famous ‘St. John’s Church’ which is found within the premises of the ashram.
Subhash Dhara: When in Sat Tal you must visit Subhash Dhara which is an awesome freshwater spring originating from the thickly populated forests of the lake towards the western region. Being a natural spring it will leave you spell bound because of its beautiful location.
The lake is a paradise for adventure as you can enjoy lots of activities such as camping, trekking, boating, and mountain biking. You can also take part in rafting and rock climbing which are also popular amongst the tourist visiting the region.
How To Reach
In order to reach the lake you will find that it is within a comfortable driving distance of 6 hours non-stop and is about 320 kilometers from Delhi. You will also find that the roads are very motorabale after the improvements of the National Highway up to Moradabad. After you have crossed Bhimtal, take turn to the left after about 5 kilometers. You can also reach the lake by air as the nearest air base to Sattal is the Pantnagar Airport. If you are coming by rail then the nearest railhead is located in Kathgodam.
