Kerala Punnamada Lake
Punnamada Lake is an augmentation of the Vembanad Lake. The lake lies spread across the Kuttanad region in Alappuzha district with lots of scenic beauty all around it. The lake is dotted with large area nut and coconut trees. You can enjoy the beauty of the lake from close quarters when you travel in the many small boats which are seen sailing through the lake for transportation. A ride in these boats will give a glimpse of the canals, paddy fields and the palm groves.
When you visit the lake in the month of August, you will be able to witness the famous boat race which is popularly known as the Nehru Trophy boat race a sport which is conducted annually. It is held on the second Saturday. Many people throng the lake to enjoy the boat race. The ideal time to visit Punnamada Lake is from December to May.
History
As it is said the history of any place lies in the place and its surroundings and it is history which makes a place popular. This is equally true for this lake which is a historical site.
The Punnamada Lake backwaters are a place where you are able to see the remarkable union of six major rivers. These rivers spread out extensively before merging with the 80 kilometer coastline of the district. The town is itself crisscrossed by numerous canals known as the National Waterway 3. Lots of coconut palm trees are seen dotted around this lake which has led to the growth of a thriving coir industry with excellent export oriented products.
You will also come across huge quality of fishes and prawns on the coasts of this backwater lake

Alappuzha beach: It is one of the most popular beaches of Kerela. It is situated in the district of Alappuzha. It is considered to be a large network of lakes, lagoons and several freshwater rivers intersections.
Thangasseri: It is a seaside village complete with all sorts of historical evidences which are available in the shape of the remnants of an old Portuguese Fort and the churches all dating back to the 18th century.
Mayannad: It is a place which is famous for its many shrines and temples. A popular one is the Subramanya temple which was supposedly said to have been consecrated by the Sri Sankaracharya, a Hindu philosopher.
Thirumullavaram: It is one of the best beach spots. You can literally feel the cool breeze softly caressing you as you bask lazily in the sunshine sipping a cool drink. You can also enjoy swimming here.
Karumadikuttan: It is a small village very near to Ambalapuzha which is famous for its black granite idol of Lord Buddha popularly called Karumadikuttan. It dates back to the 9th or 10th century.
How to Reach?
In order to enjoy the beauty of a place you must also be able to reach it easily and conveniently. This is also equally true with this Lake which has all modes of transport available.
You can easily reach the lake by rail as the nearest railway station is the Alappuzha Railway Station or even by plane as the nearest Airport is the Kochi International Airport. You can also reach it by private or personal modes of transport as the lake is connected by excellent motor able roads from all parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Alternatively you can reach Alappuzha's KSRTC bus stand which is about 5 kilometers from the railway junction on NH 47.
