History
The history says a tale of the lake anshupa which is almost hurtling down to the path of extinction. Reason found behind this are numerous in count, the main being the fact that it was earlier very prominently linked with the river mahanandi and later it was ripped off when the bank of the mahanandi river was mound with clay and stone to hold back the river water in order to support the roadways. Or it can be said that due to the need of embankment of the river mahanandi the lake was chiselled out from it.
For those who are not familiar with the name of the lake it is the prodigious and largest sweet water lake in Orissa. At its ostentation Anshupa Lake holds a water height of about 40-50 feet but unfortunately due to its constant filling up with silt and other sedimentary material like sand and clay it is barely left out with a water engulfment of merely 10 feet,
Earlier it used to be a home of more than 500 fishermen families but fish caches declining astonishingly resulted in most of them moving to other abodes.
For ages anshupa has maintained connection with mahanandi river through two streams or outlets
Named as kabulla and halahula, through the former the flood water used to penetrate into the lake and the excess water used to rebound back to the river through the latter after the recession of the floodwater, this floodwater used to wash out the weeds and also bring into ample quantity of fishes into the core of anshupa. But later following the extremity of these two connections a lion share of lake water got stucked with weeds, there was not artificial measure taken to clean up these weeds.
Which resulted in the severe shrinkage within the fishing area
Another vital reason for the declination of this lake is the wearing away of the soils surface leading to the destruction of the land surface, the surrounding saranda and bishnupur forest was denuded severely due to soil erosion resulting in a large scale deforestation, which again resulted in high siltation of the lake, to add butter to the toast the nutrition that plunged into the lake resulted in created in wild growth of the weeds.
Also people living here have started cultivating wheat over a large part of the lake , earlier these were illegal encroachment but later on it was legalised.
