Haryana Karna Lake

Karna lake is one of the famous and major lakes in Haryana.  This lake is named after Karna, the legendary character of Mahabharata.GT Road between both the cities Delhi and Chandigarh also has the banks of this lake.This lake is like a short half on the highway.  It is a myth famous in the area that, Karna of Mahabharata one took bath in this lake and he presented his weapon to Lord Indra for blessing him to defeat Arjun, a war-enemy of Karna. The name of district is derived from Karna-Taal. Taal stands for lake and hence this lake has an importance as per religious view.Geographical coordinates of this lake are 29044.632’ N and 76058.574’E’29.7438670 N to 76.9623330 E. These coordinates are responsible for providing a better stream of water (also beneficial for water species).

History

This Lake was officially constructed during 1983. Haryana government started and irrigation programe under complete agricultural package to farmers.  As a part of that package, this lake was constructed. Initially the prime purpose of this lake was only irrigation but late, the area of the lake was extended.  According to the statistics available, more than 61% of the agricultural land around Karnal district is irrigated from this lake. Various sources of direct irrigation, small canals, minors and pipelines are spread in the area for facility of farmers.

How to Reach

To access this lake, all the three ways of transportation are available.

By Air: One will have to de-board at Hisar or Kurukshetra for reaching this lake. From airport, there are frequent means are available for this place.

By Rail: Karnal is the nearest rail Head.  From railway station, various means are available to reach this lake.

By Road: Various link roads from another parts of the district, state highways and national highways are available to reach this lake.Tourist cabs, bust services of Haryana Government are also available at affordable cost.

Various attractive places are located near and at a small distance from this lake.  Rani Sati Temple, Mahadev temple and Durga Temple are some of the famous temples located at this area.  Boating facility is also being provided here by the tourism department of Haryana. Besides it, Karnal University is also famous place for students.

Local market of Karnaal is cheaper than other parts of the state.Shawls, fabrics and Iron made house hold equipment are famous at this place. As far as tourism is concerned, a tourist bungalow is also located here, which can be booked online from anywhere in the country.Official website of the Haryana State Government has all the facilities to book resorts and tourist bungalows at low charges.
