Rajasthan Balsamand Lake
Balsamand Lake is located about 5 kilometres away from Jodhpur. This lake is positioned on the Jodhpur-Mandore Road. This popular spot for picnic has attracted visitors from far and wide areas since a long time. This was actually designed as a water reservoir and its length is about one kilometer and breadth is 50 m and the depth of 15 m. This water reservoir used to fulfill water needs of Mandore area.
Later as a summer palace, the Balsamand Lake Palace was built. The palace on the shore of this lake is a great attraction for the visitors coming here. Set amidst verdant greenary like gardens full of trees like pomegranate, mango, guava, papaya and plum, this is a haven for the visitors. This also offers home to animals and birds like jackal and peacock respectively.
History
In 1159 AD, Balak Rao Parihar built a lake namely, Balsamand Lake. It is situated about five kilometres away from Jodhpur. The palace was also built by him and it depicts the contemporary Rajputana architecture. Red sandstone, famous in Jodhpur has been used in building this palace. Traditional and antique furniture and medieval style of Rajasthan complements this palace. Beautiful floor coverings and tapesteries in Rajasthani style augments the beauty of the palace. Today, a heritage hotel runs in this palace.

To reach Balasamand Lake, road transport is easily available. Rajasthan’s Road Transport Corporation buses ply their services to this place. Taxis and coaches can also be hired from the Jodhpur City to reach Balasamand Lake. Jodhpur Airport is the nearest airport and Jodhpur Railway Station is the nearest railway station.
