Karnataka Hebbal Lake
On the starting point of National highway number 7 in Bangalore district of Karnataka state in India, this lake is located. This lake was constructed on the theory of natural way of forming the lakes. Various Bandhas were constructed to stop the river water during flood. After securing the region from regular flood, this lake came into existence. Hebbal Lake is one of the three lakes constructed in Karnatak on the theory of natural damming formation. The effective area of this lake was measured upto 3750 Hact. Various areas of public residence of Yashwantpur district, Rajmahal Extension, BEL and HMT Ltd are come into the water supply areas of this lake. One of the main aims of construction of this lake is also to provide drinking water to the residents. During 1974, the area of this lake was measured as 77.95 Hact. Yearly catchment of this lake is measured as per the rainfall received in the city. This lake is very useful and effective for the residents.
History
Management of this lake is the responsibility of Public Works Department. Basically the responsibilities to manage all the administrative affairs have been shouldered by Karnataka State Forest Department. Later a separate organization constituted in Karnatak namely, Lake Development Authority and all the responsibilities related to lake have been transferred to the LDA. LDA is a registered society under Indian Societies Act 1860 and looking after all the lakes of Bangalore region. Indian did a pact with Norway and under the terms and conditions of that pact, an amount of Rs. 2.7 crore invested in making dynamic changes in the lake. This project was started in 1998. To proceed further according to the project needs, two islands of artificial origin were created alongside the lake. During the decade of 90s a pact was also done with Australia for stopping the extraordinary growth of water hyacinth in the Hebbal Lake.
Flora and Fauna
Various bird species are inhabited in this lake. The numbers of migratory birds, domestic birds are also the subject of various research fellows. Spot Billed Pelican, Shoveller, Little Grebe, Coot, Purple Herons and Spot-Billed Ducks are found here in large numbers. Grey Herons are also included in the varieties of birds inhabited in this lake.
For the urban population of Bangalore, water requirement is much needy and to fulfill the same, this lake is one of the best resources. LDA started a launch in 2004 namely “Public-Private Participation”. According to this program, various companies were given the responsibility to look after the specific maintenance task for next 15 years. This effort increased the curiosity in general public towards environment protection. Hotel Oberoi Group has been given the responsibility to look after the lake for next 15 years.Public works department has also created a various parks and amenities around the lake for convenience of general public.
How to Reach
By Air : Air Transportation if very clear to reach this lake.Bangaluru International Airport is the nearest airport.
By Rail : All the major trains connected from Bangalore and easy to access.
By Road : National Highway No. 7 is the faster way to reach this lake.Besides it, various link roads and state highways connected from other cities of the State are also in god condition to reach this lake.
