Haryana Surajkund
This is a man made water reservoir located near Delhi. The lake falls in the area of Haryana and adjacent to another natural lake called Anagpur Dam.This lake (Suraj Kund) was said to be constructed by Tomar kings.Suraj Kund is accessible from Delhi, Faridabad, Gurgaon and other main cities of India. A large Sun temple is also constructed on the bank of this lake. It is said that Tomar dynasty was worshipper of Sun god and hence they constructed the sub temple. Not only on the bank of this lake, but in other areas of their empire.
History
This lake was built during 10th century. This man made water reservoir was constructed near another dam of 8th century to full fill the water need of the population residing around the area. It is evident from history that King Suraj Pal of Tomar dynasty has constructed this lake. This lake was constructed at the rear portion of Aravali hills as general surface of the area was supporting for any such construction. Literal meaning of this dam is the Lake for Sun. It is also believed that offerings have been made by Tomar kings to Sun god in this reservoir too. Another water reservoir on same name is also located at Sangrur district of Punjab. As per the historical findings, Tomar dynasty, who inhabited near Aravali hills, later moved and shifted to another location. For fulfilling their faith to Sun god, they constructed this lake. It is also a myth of mystery in the public that King Suraj Pal, who constructed this lake, named the reservoir after his name. The lake was built by king Suraj Pal for his daughter. Some archeological activities done near the lake revealed that a large Sun temple was erected near the lake but ruins are only there. This lake was again furnished during the ruling period of Emperor Feeroz Shah Tughlak. All the stair cases and terraces were re-constructed with a new stone finish. After the vanishing of Tomar dynasty, the Surajkund remained there. Later, during modern period, government of Hayrana took initiatives to renovate the lake and erect tourist spots.
Attractioins
At a walking distance of more than 10 minutes, a natural water spring is located, named as Siddha-Kund which has a religious importance and visited by pilgrims.
Asola Bhatti Wild Life Sanctuary
This wild life sanctuary is located near the Suraj Kund. This sanctuary has a diversified flora and fauna within the area of 2 kilometers of its expansion.The tail end of Aravali Hills is the base of this wild life sanctuary.
Surjakund Mela
A fortnight long festival is organised ever year at this location called Surajkund Mela. The entrance of the mela premises made with a resemblance of Badrinath temple of Uttarakhand. A large festival of traditional craft is organized on this occasion.This mela organization was started during the year 1987.
How to Reach
By Air : Indira Gandhi International Airport is the nearest airport.From where frequent road transports are available as it covers a very short distance not more than 20 kilometers.
By Rail : New Delhi or Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations are the nearest rail heads to reach this lake.
By Road : This lake can be accessed by road as various link roads from Delhi and state highways from Faridabad and Gurgaon are well connected to this area.
