Jammu & Kashmir Tso Moriri
Tsomoriri lake is located in Jammu and Kashmir state at the place of Changthang. Changthang carries the meaning “Northern Plains”.The average altitudinal height of this lake is 4,595 meters from mean sea level. This lake is graded as high altitude lake and also the largest lake among all high altitude lakes. This lake is lying in two countries, India and Tibet. Between Laddakh and Zansker (Tibet) the area o this lake is spread. Water source of this lake is melting of snow from high mountains and various springs alongside. From two directions, water enters into this lake. From Southwest portion and from Northern portion, there are two water intake points for this lake. The water outlet point from this lake was located in the south but the same has now been blocked. Due to this reason water of this lake is converted into saline water. Salt is generated from this lake for local people. Since 1959, this practice has been stopped. Oilgotrophic nature of the lake makes its water as alkaline chargers. This lake is based on Ordovician rocks. Temperature of this lake is shuttles between 00 C to 300 C in summers and in winters; the mercury goes down and remains between -100 C to -400 C.
History
The four groups of high altitude laks have been formed based on their origin and Tsomoriri lakes comes under the 3rd groups .i.e. Remnant Lakes. Lakes are further classified in four major groups. (i) Glacial lakes, (ii) Structural lakes (iii) Remnant lakes (iv) Natural Dammed lakes. This lake combines the group of Remnant lakes with Pangong Tso of Laddakh and Dal Lake of Kashmir. Ecosystem of Changthang plateau provides a landscape for this lake. Very high elevated valley surrounds this lake with high hills more than 6000mtrs. Various tribes of migratory nature reside in the area and depend on sheep farming. Yak is one and only the means of transportation in this area. This lake has a low productivity for vegetation. Almost clear water is the gift of nature as snow melting provides fresh water to this lake. Muddy layer is not bubbled with the flow of snowy eater inserted into this lake. The management of this lake is being done by the tourism department of Jammu and Kashmir. This lake is also famous with the name of lake of joy.
How to Reach
This lake is located at slightly isolated area. To reach this lake three ways of transportation can be used.
By Air
To reach this lake, air transportation is too good to use.One will de-board at Leh airport. From there, road transportation is available.
By Rail
Udhampur and Jammu are the nearest railway station.After detraining on these stations, bus facilities, tour operator are easily available at affordable cost.
By Road
By road conveyance is also available as state highways and small road are also available with regular transports.A distance of 250 kilometers will have to be travelled to reach this lake.Road is in good condition and open for transportation during summers. During winter season, the road remains closed due to security reasons.
