Rajasthan Jal Mahal Man Sagar Lake
Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan State in India is one of the most visited tourist spot too. Pink City as it is called more popularly is an important part of Delhi-Agra-Rajasthan Triangle tourism. Man Sagar Lake is located in this city. Though the beautifully illuminated lake shores and boating in traditional Rajput style wooden boats are living memories for a life time, the most attractive structure here is Jal Mahal or the Water Palace situated in the middle of the lake. On the way to the palace on boats you can see the Aravalli Hills on the other side. Several temples and forts located on these hills can be seen as tiny spots from a distance. Water treatment system has been introduced to keep the water unpolluted. Reintroduction of local vegetation and fishes and creation of 5 nesting islands made it a place for nature tourism too. Many migratory birds are visiting these nesting islands regularly. Jaipur, being an important tourist city in India and since it enjoys an important place in the golden triangle tourism which includes Delhi and Agra attracts large crowd every year. The city has enough infrastructures to accommodate large crowd of visitors and there are several good restaurants to serve all types of cuisines to the tourists from different parts of the world.
History
The location of this lake was a place in ancient days where water used to get accumulated. When the region faced a famine and water shortage in 1590’s the then ruler of the region planned to construct a dam to fight the drought. His intention was to store water carefully and to divert it to the surrounding farming lands when required. Initially the dam has been constructed using mud and quartzite and later in 17th century it has been reconstructed with stone. The lake has been provided with three sluice gates to release water for irrigation purpose. Though it has been constructed originally for irrigation purpose, it has turned out to be a mostly visited tourist spot nowadays. Later, Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh who was ruling the region during 1778 to 1803 constructed the Water Palace or Jal Mahal in the middle of the lake.
Attractions
As mentioned earlier, the Water Palace is the main attraction here. The journey to this palace through water will be an ever remembering experience in your life. The palace has been built in a blend of Rajput and Mughal style architecture. The palace is been built with red sand stone and have 5 floors. However the lower 4 floors will remain in water when the lake is full and only the top floor will be visible. There is a garden too on the terrace of the palace. Man Sagar Dam on the eastern side of the lake is the vantage point to view the lake and the surroundings. Platforms have been built around the lake to facilitate the visitors to have a close look of lake and the surroundings. Most of the people visiting the city love to spend their mornings and evenings here. Artificially created nesting islands also provide you a great experience. These islands are inhabited with many species of birds and many migratory birds also used to visit here frequently. Sight of Aravalli Hills with many temples and ancient forts is another attraction here. There are many other places of historical importance such as Amber Fort, Jaigarh Fort and Nahargarh Fort are very close to this lake. The cenatophs of yesteryear rulers in the garden opposite to lake is also an attraction for the tourists.
How to Reach
Man Sagar Lake is located about 4 Km away from Jaipur on Jaipur-Delhi National Highway No:8 Jaipur being the capital city of Rajasthan and centrally located in the state is well connected with other parts of Rajashtan and major cities like New Delhi and Mumbai by road and rail. There are several direct trains form important cities in India to Jaipur. The city is well connected with New Delhi, Mumbai Calcutta etc by air too. There are several domestic airlines plying regular flights in this route. Local transport system in the city is very good and you will not find any trouble in reaching the spot from railways station or airport.
