Assam Haflong Lake
Haflong is a beautiful lake located at just center of this hill station. This lake is popularly known as “Scotland of Assam”. Normally this lake is used by various visitors for spending their weekends and other holiday period. The beautiful surroundings of this lake is sufficient enough to attract the tourists.A very interesting place named Jatinga is just located at 9 kilometers from this lake where more than 100 migratory bird species are found during winter season. This lake is located at an average altitudinal height of 680 mtrs from mean sea level. Best timer to visit this lake is October to April every year as May to September is rainy season and during this time connecting ways to this lake face a large disturbance.
History:
Haflong lake has the pride to be the largest water tank (natural water). The probable cause of this lake is collection of rain water. The collection is done every year during the period from May to September. Remaining year goes dry as monsoon season in Assam remains throughout the year but receiving of rainfall is less from October to April. According to a social myth behind the name of this lake is, a traveler from Middle east, named John-De-Vasco, visited this area and when he became so thirsty, he was told that his destination is still half done. Half portions he will have to travel. The spot has been named Halflong since that event. A religious belief is also popular in public that when Lord Indra stretched his arms and blessed this area with water, the blessings were captured by the Rahu in route and half portion of the blessing has been received by this area. This is also a reason to be called as Halflong.
Attractions
Jatinga : This is a village located near the lake (not more than 9 kilometers away) and also amazing spot because of a huge number of suicide cases committed by Migratory birds. Perhaps this is only the place in world where such activity takes place.
Maibong
This place is famous as whole the administration of North Cachar is being looked after from here itself. This place is 72 kilometers away from the Lake. During the 18th century period, this place was also the capital of Dimsa Kachari. A temple constructed by Kachari kings is also located here that was built in 123th century.
How to Reach
By Air : Though, direct air connection up to Haflong is not available. A passenger will have to de-board on Guwahati International Airport. From airport, frequent road services are available upto the lake.Rail connection is also available.
By Rail : Dimapur is the nearest rail head to access this lake.One has to reach Dimapur railway station, from where, easy and regular road conveyances are available.
By Road: By road journey from Dimapur, Guwahati and Silchar is easy for any passenger as sufficient road transportation is available at affordable cost.
