Thanjavur Maratha Palace
Denoted with its local name Aranmani, prominent Thanjavur Maratha Palace is a huge complex which had been built by local rulers of this region-Bhonsle Family that had ruled from the period 1674 to 1855 until this kingdom was overpowered by other dynasties. Rulers of Thanjavur Nayak had built this palace while they ruled it. Once the kingdom fell down, this palace came under the control of Thanjavur Maratha rulers who turned it their official residence and center of power in that era.
History
As an important part of the Periya Kottai or the Big Fort in today’s Thanjavur city, the famous Thanjavur Maratha Palace had been built by the last regional king of the Thanjai Nayak dynasty named Vijayaraghava Nayakkar in 1633-74 CE. Built many centuries ago, Thanjavur Maratha Palace remained in the control of various kings including Thanjavur Nayak and Thanjavur Maratha kingdoms till 1799 while British had started annexing the regional kingdoms to keep hold of the regions to increase their ruling arena. Thanjavur Marathas were the longest serving owners of this palace as well as nearby forts. This palace remained under the hold of Bhonsle Family as well for several decades during the pre-British era.
