Longai River

Famous for its identity of being a trans-boundary river in the Indian subcontinent, Longai River literally create history in the whole region. The origin of this river in Tripura state makes it strategic. With its origin in Jampui Hills to cross through lower side of the state or rest states and its entry into plains of Bangladesh thereafter, this river maintains high speed in the current course.

While passing ahead, Longai River crosses through the historic Karimganj district in the nearby state of Assam from where it continues to pass further until entering into Bangladesh. In between its course, this river also crosses the drains in Hakaluki Haor to make it an important river in the region. It is notable for the role of supporting many irrigation projects in India and Bangladesh.

Course

Longai River has a long course starting from Tripura’s Jampui Hills to cross by the nearby state of Assam with nearness to Karimganj town located on the banks to end into Latu village in Bangladesh. The long course of this river has made it worth appealing from all the areas by which it passes in both the countries. The notable attraction is the tributaries of this river in Tripura to Assam and finally, in Bangladesh keeps on increasing.

With developmental initiatives in the river-reorganizations, this river too has been managed properly. It now leaves a charismatic impact in all those regions its crosses by. Such regions are usually affected by floods but equally they are made to avail the benefits of maximum facilities for irrigation and related water needs.

Tributaries

Uniqueness of Longai River is that it leaves an impeccable impact in both the countries through which it has the course. Several tributaries connect to this river in the due course at the same juncture. Such cases are witnessed in India and Bangladesh but while in the later country it welcomes maximum number of tributaries. In fact the tributaries are through Indo-Burman Ranges in Tripura and Assam states in India while many parts of Bangladesh see drastic changes thereafter.

Present Scenario

It is important to know what makes Longai River unique and differentiated in the present scenario. The rivers crossing through northeastern states, especially this one, are one of the key reasons for flooding in the region. As several such rivers pass through northeastern states in India and merge into the rest in the Indian plains or nearby countries it became necessary to take concrete steps for thorough and effective water management plans to lessen future flooding scenes.

Similar such attempts have been made with steps taken in neighboring countries especially in Bangladesh where many rivers from India take their courses to end in the sea. It is notable that Longai River remains important for India and Bangladesh. Measures have been taken through adding the tributaries or canals with several rivers to cross through these regions.

Longai River too has been well managed in Tripura and the adjacent state of Assam in India besides neighboring Bangladesh where it sees end of its course. Assam is the highly affected state where floods cause the natural calamities. This area is commonly affected through natural calamities throughout the year.

It all happens because of several rivers passing through this state including the big course of Longai River that too invite such problems in the region. This river crosses through Assam and then moves eastwards to Bangladesh.
