Juri River

Identity of Juri River in Indian subcontinent of being a trans-boundary river keeps it into limelight in India and Bangladesh. This river passes through long stretch of areas in both the countries. Origin of this river is in India's northeastern state of Tripura in Jampui Hills and so is the river named after. This river crosses through the areas in the state until entering into the neighboring country, Bangladesh. The entry point of this river inside Bangladesh is from the Kulaura Upazila region in the Maulvi Bazar District which is a famous riverside area.

Course

Juri River crosses a huge tract of area in India’s Tripura state until it changes its course into neighboring Bangladesh. This river moves ahead further to merge into the Kushiyara River in Bangladesh. Indian course of this river is mainly in the northeastern hilly regions until its entry into Bangladesh from where the river goes down into the plains to merge into other rivers.

This river has created history in both India and Bangladesh that use it for multiple types of benefits from it. Both the countries have also faced its ire due to it causing floods in the region it crosses by. Notable element is that somehow or the other, this river plays an important role in the growth of entire region although it often causes worries both the countries which encounter floods.

Tributaries

There are many locations in India and Bangladesh through which Juri River crosses and several tributaries connect to this famous river. Those tributaries play pivotal role in facilitating irrigational needs besides offering other benefits to the particular areas. The added benefits of such tributaries linked with Juri River are that they prove helpful to keep this river under control through diverting the course of its water.

Present Scenario

Although Juri River underwent several changes in its course in the earlier occasions but that still didn’t reflect too many variations in routes from origin in India’s Tripura till the river entering into neighboring Bangladesh. The state government of Tripura in India has taken concrete steps to utilize this river for developmental purposes in the Indian side.

Bangladesh too has taken many such initiatives recently. Most steps are still in its initial phase. Proper use of this river by applying the best water management resources has made things easier for it to benefit all those regions by which this river flows. Surface water resources management options and other related steps taken ever have made things easier for Indian side of Juri River to remain benevolent.

Once this river enters into Bangladesh, it is under the control of the river resources authorities of that country but due to lack of concrete strategies the river usually causes more harms than offering benefits to the inhabitants. This river has high water flow in neighboring Bangladesh and usually remains uncontrollable on several occasions especially in monsoon period. Repeated flooding is common scene there.

The reason of Juri River having high flow even in the Indian side is that it originates from the hill ranges. This river maintains pace of falling from the mountain patterns to the lower sides until terminating into Bangladesh.

There is northerly flow of Juri River while it crosses through Kanchanpur Valley until its next steps to meet the Manu River for around 100 kilometers. It crosses further and enters into Bangladesh in the Sakhan Ranges to move towards the Kailasahar for approximately 167 kilometers further. This long course is important for India and Bangladesh.

While entering into Bangladesh, this river moves ahead till Dhalai area to cross 117 kilometer distance more. Juri River crosses to Khowai and Baramura Range while its flow is in the westwards in many parts of Agartala before entering into neighboring country. Its crossing over Gumti and Muhuri rivers to pass to Deotamura Range in westward flow until ending into Bangladesh is the biggest course.
