Jawai River
Originating from the Aravalli Ranges in the Udaipur district of Rajasthan state, the famous Jawai River continues its trajectory till the end. By the time this river reaches up to the Jalore district nearby Sayala, its course starts changing with its joining with the Khari River. With 2,976 km² catchment area of this river, it continues its journey toward northwest direction for approximately 96 kilometers. The major districts Jalore, Pali and Udaipur are famous catchment areas of this river.
Course
Jawai River originates from Udaipur and moves towards the Jalore and Pali districts where it meets with many tributaries during its path of flow. The course of this river with its movement from one part of Rajasthan state to another is worth noticeable.
Tributaries
Main tributary of this river is Sukri River. Another tributary which submerges with this river is Khari River.
Present Scenario
It is worth noticeable that Jawai River plays pivotal role in helping Rajasthan state to develop self-sufficiency of water supply & related issues with irrigation to promote agriculture in this region. The notable development in the recent past is the creation of largest dam in the western Rajasthan namely Jawai Dam on this river itself. This dam has been built nearby Sumerpur in Pali district.
Jawai River is famous for one more reason. Twin cities of Sumerpur and Sheoganj are situated on the banks of this river. It has a social and historic relevance today. Too much progress has been noticed ever since the dam is being created on Jawai River. For example a full-fledged railway station has been formed on this dam.
It is perhaps one of the reason that a dam of the same name is also being developed on the tributary of Jawai River namely Luni River. Such initiative was considered effective in terms of continuous growth prospects.
Such developments are vibrant in Sumerpur coming under Pali district in the state where dam had been built for the incessant growth of this region. The erstwhile ruler of Jodhpur, Maharaja Umaid Singh had constructed this dam close to Sumerpur town on the Jawai River. Construction work began in 1946 and come to end in 1957 after which this dam was declared in operation.
The dam on this river becomes a major reason for the turning up of migratory birds’ winter paradise in the present scenario.
The Jawai Dam Crocodile Sanctuary is nearby the dam & both Indian and many categories of migratory birds do arrive here every time. A look on sarus cranes, comb duck and spot-billed ducks would make you realize the importance of this river in the present context. Their presence is common in and around the dam on Jawai River.
Likewise, demoiselle & eastern crane and bar-headed geese are also commonly seen during the winter time and also the other migrating birds can be often seen here. Crocodiles can be easily seen on the shores of the dam on Jawai River. They all offer excellent feel on the Khari River banks.
