Gumti River

Gomti River is also known as Gomati or Gumti River. The river is an important tributary of the River Ganges. According to the historical information provided by the locals of this region, this river has been considered as daughter of the Sage Vashisht. People have beliefs that one can wash away his/her sins by taking bath in this river. From the religious point of view, the Gumti River is among the most transcendental rivers in the country.

Gumti River starts from Dumbur from the north eastern hilly part of the Indian state Tripura. From the source, it passes around 150 kilometers along the meandering course between the hills, turns towards east and then enters Bangladesh from Katak Bazar. From there, it again takes the meandering course and flows towards the north side of the Comilla town. Since the Burichang upazila is at its north, it passes through the Debidwar upazila and meets Compainganj Bazar. The distance between Compainganj Bazar and Mainamati is around 60 kilometers. From Compainganj, the Gumti River turns towards the west and ultimately joins Meghna in Daukandi upazila at Shapta. The region between Daukandi and Compainganj is around 50 kilometers. The Gumti River is almost 135 kilometers long in Bangladesh. It is having a tributary of Dakatia River while, its dis-tributary is Buri River.

A dam is also constructed over this river close to the Dumbur region that has made a large lake of around 40 square km.

The Gumti River has been considered as the most sacred water place in the Indian state of Tripura. It has some special importance, particularly when it comes to the Bengali settlers and the tribals. In every winter during Por Sankranti, people desire to take a dip in this holy water at Tirthamukh at least once where they also worship Deity Tuiboma. It has been believed that by taking a holy dip in this Gumti river will wash away all the sins. The residents also do pinddan in order to dedicate this to their ancestors. Pinddan at the bank of Gumti River is thought as the most important activity that a person must perform. The locals also declare that the footprints of Lord Vishnu can also be seen in Tirthamukh.

Course

The origin of Gumti River is from Gomat Tall, which is also called Fulhaar Jheel present near to the Madho tanda in the Pilibhit area of India. The river flows from the distance of around 900 kilometers, going through Uttar Pradesh form where it ultimately joins Ganges River in the region of Saidpur situated in Kaithi.

After flowing a distance of almost 20 kilometers from its origin, a small river named Gaihaaee combines with it. The river then flows in a small stream till it reaches Mohammadi Kheri that is present at a distance of around 100 kilometers, and after some distance other tributaries like Andhra Choha, Choha and Sukheta combines with the Gumti River. This is a point which is considered as the substantial part of Gumti River. Apart from this, there are other tributaries joining the course of this river including Kathina River in the region of Mailani, and Saarayan in the region of Sitapur, close to the town of Janupur. When Ganges and Gomti combines with each other, you will find a famous temple named Markandev Mahadeo.

Tributaries

Dakatia River

Dakaitia River is the most important tributary of Gumti River and is also the trans-boundary river of Bangladesh. It starts to flow from the Indian state of Tripura present in the Comilla District at Bagsara. The major source or origin of flow of the Dakatia River is Kakrai, but little Feni cuts it back and captures the upper portion of it. The river has now its origin from Chauddagram Khal that joins the river with little Feni. This river has sent out a southward channel that forms the Noakhali Khal. The major channel ambles westward to the Shekherhat, which is a point from where the older course of river flows to the south and joins Meghna River at Rajpur. Tidal currents are responsible to feed Dakatia River through Meghna River for about three fourth years. This river is around 207 kilometers in length because of which, it is an important tributary of the Gumti River.
