Kolar River
The Kolar River is a river flowing in central part of India. The Kolar River is one of the main tributaries of river Narmada. It is a right bank tributary of the famous river of Madhya Pradesh. The total course of the river is around 101 km and flows within the state of Madhya Pradesh.
Origin
The Kolar River originates in the Vindhya Range of Sehore district near Bilqisganj village at an elevation of around 550m. It flows towards the south western region and meets the famous river Narmada near Nasrullahganj in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh.
Course
The total drainage area of the river basin is around 1,347 square kilometers and spans across two districts of Madhya Pradesh. The upper part of the river basin lies at a higher plain of around 300 to 650 meters and much part of the river gushes through the tropical deciduous forests. The river then emerges into the plains near Jholiapur. The soil in the upper basin of the river is quite poor and the main crops that are grown are wheat and gram. However, the soil in and around the lower basin of the river is much better. It has a flatter slope that has been used extensively, much more than its upper counterpart. Floods are also quite common in this area during the monsoon season.
Kolar Dam
The Kolar dam is located near Lakhweri, Sehore, situated around 35 kilometers from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. It is a major masonry dam of about 45 meters high, constructed across one of the three tributaries of the river Narmada—the Kolar river. With a maximum storage capacity of around 270 M centimeters, the dam serves the irrigation purposes of Bhopal and the nearby areas.
How to Reach
Reaching Kolar Dam is very easy. The dam is located near Bhopal which is very well connected with the rest of India with a good network of airways, roadways and railways. The nearest International Airport is located at Bhopal. Once you are in Bhopal, you can reach the dam by hiring cars or by bus which regularly ply between Sehore and Bhopal. The Kolar Dam is very famous among the tourists as well.
There is a railway station at Sehore too which is quite well connected with the rest of India. One can board a train from Bhopal to reach Sehore at much cheaper rates than the other modes of transportation.
