Subansiri River
Subansiri River is also known as the “Gold River” is the biggest tributary of the upper Brahmaputra River that flows through the rocky plains of eastern Himalayas entering Arunachal Pradesh, India. The river further flows ahead to Assam merging with the Brahmaputra River at Majuli. Majuli is the remote location that beckons true adventurers to have great fun and create some great memories during your stay.
The white waters of the Subansiri River are profuse and the rapids is quite challenging. The water adventure is rewarding and thrilling to experience as it is one of the most wonderful regions of the country that is tucked away in the hills of Arunachal Pradesh.
Course
Originating from the sky touching Himalayas Mountains, it flows in the direction of the East and the Southeast portion of the state flowing down towards Assam state. Subansiri River with the largest drainage basin of 32,653 square kilometers, it is said to be the biggest tributary of the Brahmaputra River of Assam. The length of this huge river is 445 kilometers. This voluminous river has observed the release of 18789 cubic meters per sec of water. It supplies about 7.98% of the Brahmaputra River’s flow.
The river descends through lush forests in Arunachal Pradesh draining the flow beyond the Himalayan Range. It gushes through these larger than life mountain ranges flowing vigorously towards Arunachal Pradesh joining the mighty Brahmaputra River at the magical union of Majuli Island which is considered to be the biggest inhabitant of the river island across the globe.
The river flows all the way through the rocky terrain and it is one of the adrenal pumping and fastest rivers set it in the mesmerizing scenic environment. The banks of the river are densely populated.
Tributaries
The Subansiri River itself is a biggest tributary of the Brahmaputra River of Assam state. The river originates from Himalayan ranges and comes flowing down towards Arunachal Pradesh, it is the sole river with no tributaries to join amidst during her en route to India.
Present Scenario
Presently, there is the Subansiri Lower Dam that is officially named as “Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project” is being constructed on the Subansiri River. It is situated for about 2 Km upstream of the Gerukamukh village on the border of Arunachal and Assam states.
The project is described as “Run of the river” by NHPC limited power station, this dam is expected to supply about 3000 MW power when it is completed. However, the project has undergone various problems during the construction including redesigning and landslides. The project is expected to complete in the year 2014 and perhaps the biggest hydroelectric project of the country.

Subansiri River is said to be offering the best water sport activities. Fishing and kayaking are the most carried out activities by the visitors here. How to Reach
There are several domestic flights connecting to the various cities of India. Apart from that there is an intercity that runs between Guwahati and Tinsukia, Dibrugarh to Tinsukia station which is about 45 Km. Kamrup Express, Brahmaputra Express and Rajdhani Express run on the intercity rail tracks. If you wish to experience the feel of the nature than the best way is to travel by road. NH 37 passes through the Assam state and connects to all the major cities and towns. From Guwahati which is the nearest destination where numerous transportation facilities available to reach the destination. By road it takes about 445 Km to reach Dibrugarh.

About one hundred and thirty five meters high hydroelectric dam is going to be built to provide the power supply to the adjoining towns and also for Bhutan and Tibet. Therefore, the river project is termed as “Future Powerhouse”. This is some major project and said to be the biggest one to be constructed in today’s date.
