Khowai River

One of the famous rivers in India as well as Bangladesh, Khowai River is known for its exclusiveness and identity of being a trans-boundary river in this region. It is one such river in the Indian subcontinent that is often in notice. Its origin is in the northeastern Indian state of Tripura till Bangladesh. With its origination in the famous Atharamura Hills in Tripura hills’ eastern portions, this river plays a crucial role in many aspects but benefits in irrigation sector of both countries are of paramount value.

Course

The course of Khowai River is from west to northwards areas since its origination in Tripura in India to end in Balla area in Sylhet district, Bangladesh. With its entry into Sylhet in Bangladesh, this river takes new turn into lower plains to continue until merging into another river. The course continues into the eastern side of Bangladesh through crossing the eastside Habiganj town before emergence into Meghna near Nabiganj. This river takes next step to merge into Kalni River in Bangladesh.

Literally takes the shape of a stream while its course in Bangladesh, Khowai River is worth studying for the flows in that country. The scenario changes once it passes the Indian boundaries in northeastern region. According to the recent findings, the estimated terrain elevation is 16 meters above the sea level.

That is why, this river remains into limelight for typical roles in Bangladesh and for causing floods. The river often causes natural calamities there. It should be noted well that Khowai River equally plays crucial role to bring ample growth in the region through offering best irrigation solutions to promote agriculture.

Tributaries

What makes Khowai River important in both India and Bangladesh? Due to merging of this river with major tributary Kalni River before end, the river merges with many other rivers. This river supports other rivers or streams through tributaries. Equally does it get support from several smaller rivers or streams from its course in Tripura in Indian side till Nabiganj in neighboring Bangladesh? Many developmental initiatives have been taken place in the recent past to manage this river in Indian side. Similar such steps are proposed to be taken in Bangladesh especially for those rivers that originate in India and enter there to end.

Present Scenario

Khowai River has an important role to play to bring several things in order in terms of water management system in India since its origination in Tripura region till end to make it self-sufficient for water related needs. As this region is located at a particular elevation and do share borders with the plains in Bangladesh, it has somehow become easier to manage rivers ever since concrete steps have been taken place.

During the course of Khowai River passing through the hills to plains in hundreds of kilometers after origination in Tripura, this river enters into Bangladesh. It flows in the neighboring country between Baramura and Atharamura. Equally does it serve the area with remarkable contribution in Indian side as much as is in Bangladesh for advantages and disadvantages.

Khowai River has a remarkable contribution in the areas through which it passes to turn them an entirely self-reliant region in terms of water management systems. The river also has wonderful contribution for irrigation purposes. Attempts have also been made to reorganize those areas through which Khowai River passes to ensure that the areas avail maximum advantages. Worse consequences are also there at the same juncture but steps are taken to suppress them.

Such trends continue in India as much as are they in the neighboring Bangladesh where Khowai River ends the course. Both countries have many such rivers that cross the boundaries. Common practices are applied to make things easier to avoid the water related crisis.
