Chandragiri River

The Chandragiri River that starts in the Kodagu Nadu of Karnataka flows towards Kerala and this river once served as the boundary between the Thulu and Malayala Nadu. The river that has its starting point in the Kodagu start flows through the city of Sulliya in Karnataka as it takes a north west turns and makes its entry into Kerala. In Kerala, it flows through the district of Kasargod and the flows into the Arabian sea.

This river is also called the Payaswini River and is almost 105 kms in length. This river gets its name from the fort of Chandragiri that dates back to the 17th century.  This Chandragiri fort attracts a lot of tourists because of its ancient beginning and architectural excellence.  The tourists have a great view of the river and the fort when they visit Chandragiri.

Very close to the Chandragiri fort at a distance of a few kilometres away is the Bekal fort that is ancient and very beautifully constructed.  That fort is on the seashore and the view from the fort is absolutely fantastic.  The Chandragiri River actually flows on into the Arabian Sea after it runs past the district of Kasargoad. Incidentally, this happens to be the longest river in the district.

The river has coconut groves on the shores on either sides or the view of the coconut trees swaying and the flowing water levels of the Chandragiri River are a beautiful sight to behold and most of the tourists love to see this view.  This also is an ideal sunset view point and tourists gather here for seeing this.  This river is also known for the backwater houseboat cruises that are a hit among the tourists who come for all over the world.  Tourism in kerala is synonymous with the houseboat cruises and this facility is available on the Chandragiri River.

Course

The Chandragiri River starts from the Kodagu nadu in Karnataka and from there flows through the Sulliya district in Karnataka before it takes a diversion in north west and enters Kerala through the Kasargod district.  If flows through the district of Kasargod establishing itself as the longest river of the district and then goes on to merge with the Arabian sea.

The water of the Chandragiri River is used for irrigating the cultivations and as a source of water for the people residing in the district of Kasargod.  The river serves the purpose of ensuring the living of the citizens in the region.  Thus the river become more or less like a God that helps the very survival of the people of the city.

The course of the river sees a line of coconut trees all along the river and this sees a lot of tourists who come to visit the rivers for the beauty and the nature that is found in large proportions here.

Tributaris

Payaswini is one of the tributaries of this river.  Though the name is interchangeably used with the main river, this is recorded in most of the places as the name of the tributary of River Chandragiri. This merges into the Arabian Sea.  The Payaswini River also sees the line of coconut trees along the shores and this is more like the main parent river.  This is also has the Chandragiri cruises on the backwaters. So the tourists who come to see the beauty of the landscape and the river, have their hands full with the grand views that await them – the wonderful sight of the rising and setting sun, the coconut groves on the one side and the Chandragiri fort on the other side, and the quiet, and tranquil cruises on the houseboats, tourists are never going to have enough time at this sight.
