Kolab River
This Kolab River drains a catchments area of 3500 square km at proposed dam site. The government launched the HE lower Kalab project effectively by the transportation of ten observed full flow series. This was effectively carried out during the period between 1971 to 2002 and this was also observed by the CWC till lower Kalab on the catchments area and its design flood have also assessed as 21,470 cumec.
Present Situation
This Kolab lower hydroelectric project has been situated in the Koraput district that comes under Orissa and it envisages the water utilization of water present in this River Kolab. This is one of the most important tributaries of Godavari River since it does the entire power generation. This is completely a storage development that harnesses a maximum gross of 250. This project has been proposed with the installation of 460 MW and it can easily afford the annual energy of 840 Gwh which is equivalent to 90% in a complete year. This dam site can be easily approached from the Jeypore through road at a distance of approx 55 kms from the Jeypore. The main railway station is situated at Jeypore and main airport is at the Visakhapatnam. Submergence area in this project comprises of forest as well as private land. The requirement of total land is approximately five hundred ha and this is for various components. The government is trying to address various environment issues such as rehabilitation.
