Indrayani River
This river is basically a rain fed river and runs towards eastern region and merges with Bhima River during which it passes through the places namely Dehu and Alandi and also the northern parts of Pune. The river is considered to be a sacred river, since it is often referred to in religious terms as Sant Tukaram belonged to Dehu where this sacred river flows.
Facts
The sacred river Indrayani has its origin to the Kurvande Village near Lonavla in Maharashtra. A hydroelectric dam also viz Valvan Dam is also set up in this river at Kamshet. This river happens to be one of the tributaries of the great Bhima River, which again happens to be a tributary of Krishna River. Species of fresh water fishes are found in the Indrayani River and years after at Kalumbre village more species of fishes have been discovered.

Indrayani River in Maharashtra is a very old river which is associated with the sacred names of two great saints viz Sant Tukaram and Sant Dyaneshwar. Dehu is a sacred place and home town of Sant Tukaram and Alandi which has the Samadhi of Saint Dyaneshwar is also equally important. Rich marine life is also a notable activity here and a coliseum has come up at the Ghats section to take care of different requirements.
It is pertinent to add that the inmates living along the sides of the Indrayani River have faced many difficulties due to increase in the industrialization and various other extracurricular activities taking place in and around this holy river. More so, there is delay in completion of sewage treatment and actions have been initiated for speedy completion of the same. There is also the risk of loss of life since this place attracts lots of pilgrims regularly. Also irrigation is one of the activities carried out here and their construction through Chikhli-Talawade area is under way for drawing water since thousands of people visit here annually. Hydro electric project has also come up for this river.
