Doni River
The word Doni is derived from Kannada word and this river flows from the eastern side of the Sangli District of Maharashtra State in India. Though this originates from Maharashtra, most of its travel flow is in Karnataka State’s districts namely Belgaum, Bijapur and Gulbarga. Towards the Eastern side the river Doni joins Talokota.
History of the River
The City of Sangli has a very old origin which was ruled by Marathas till 1853 and later was under the British Regime. Doni River starts to flow from the nearby parts of Sangli District in Maharasthra, however, most of the flow of the river is in North Karnataka region viz Bijapur, Belgaum and Gulbarga. The river does not even cater to the irrigation needs of the farmers and flows throughout the year.
More Description
Doni River mainly caters to the requirements of people of Karnataka State in India, viz Bijapur, Gulbarga and Belgaum. The river is a small river and has more records for creating havocs. The flow is erratic and has caused floods several times.
It is noteworthy that this river brought misery to the lives of North Karnataka people, and authorities have compared this to the Yellow River (similar to Hwang Ho of China) and thus named it as Yellow River of Bijapur. This is because China’s Yellow River is also well known for changing its flow erratically like the Doni River. The water of Doni is very dirty and black in color and cannot be even used for washing utensils and the river is not of much use to the farmers, more so during drought. Neither can you depend on this water for drinking purpose.
Other Details:
Doni is a river which starts its flow from Maharashtra’s Sangli District, later takes its route to Indi, Sindgi, Basavan Bagewadi and Muddebihal Taluks and merges later with Krishna River in the Gulbarga District of Karnataka. The river runs for say a very small distance of 150 kms and in Kannada it is known as HUCCHA HOLE (a mad river) and many people have lost their lives due to its erratic flow. The erratic way of its flow also is attributed to its being dry some times and suddenly turning to be overflowing with huge water which is a strange thing to note. The nearby cities to Doni River are Bijapur, Athani.
