Political Parties in India
Political parties of India have responsible roles to play in a country, because in a country with Democratic ideals and mandate like India, only political parties can form Governments to administer the country, with good governance and stability.
India as a country today, was bits and pieces before 67 years, also ruled by Britishers for over three centuries. To get the country freed from the clutches of British supremacy, it took the united action from all people belonging to a few Political parties, principal of them were Indian National Congress and Muslim League, and also a section of Communist Party of India.
After Independence in 1947, there were splits in the major Political parties due to various reasons, and now we are amidst a large number of Political parties, which include National Parties and Regional Parties. India’s constitution having governance through a Parliament for the whole country and State Assemblies for 28 or more States and about 7 Union territories, the representation of people both for Centre and for the State is always decided by the strong Political parties wielding Influence over people.
National Governance and National Political Parties
The country’s Central Government is administered through a Parliament represented by the Political Party having the mandate of majority of people, all over the country. Unfortunately, during the past three or four General elections, no single party could achieve this kind of mandate among national parties, resulting which there has been combination of Political parties committing like thinking, which have come up to form the Government at the Centre. As of now, there are two such coalitions of parties, named National Progressive Alliance (NPA) and United Democratic Alliance (UPA). NDA is formed with the lead of Indian National Congress (INC) and UPA is organized by with the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
There are other National level parties, such as Communist Party of India, which is also in at least two forms after the Chinese Aggression in 1961, called CPI and CPI (M), while there are many powerful regional parties in every State who secure the larger mandate of the people belonging to the respective States.
Regional Political Parties
Many States in India are under the strong hold of regional parties, equally having representation of significant size carrying mandate to participate in the Parliament. These parties are already having the mandate for ruling the State level governance, hardly any national level parties having chance to form the State Government. For instance, Tamilnadu is a State ruled by the Regional Parties such as DMK and ADMK for over four decades and no national party could enter the fray after Indian National Congress missed the bus in 1967. Likewise, there are few other States where regional parties have the overall power, although National Parties have held the State Administration continuously in succession, till very recently, such as Paschim Bangla, where presently the regional party Trinamool Congress rules the Government.
