Indian National Lok Dal is based in the state of Haryana as a political party, which is also the major opposition in the state. Om Prakash Chautala is the president of the party, while Ajay Singh Chautala is in secretary general post. The INLD was a party of National Democratic Alliance and the government led by BJP.
INLD is the main party in opposition in Haryana, with interest mostly in the rural and farming communities. This party came into force in 1998, under the leadership of Ch. Om Prakash Chautala, which works relentlessly for the social welfare.
It is the dedication of INLD to help in an all round upliftment of labourers, farmers, the exploited and downtrodden in the society in both urban and rural areas. The aims of the party have been inspired by principles of Gandhi, from rich heritage of India and various noble beliefs during the national independence struggle. The belief of the party is to show dissent but in a peaceful and democratic manner as in satyagraha, or resistance in a non violent manner, which is people’s fundamental right.
History
INLD forged an alliance with BJP in 1999 Lok Sabha elections in Haryana. The parties contested in 5 out of 10 seats each and all the members got elected. Hence, Chautala was made the chief minister in 2000 for the fifth term. During the state elections for the assembly, in 2000, the INLD went on to win 90 seats of the 62 candidates fielded. Then after some times, it severed its alliance with BJP and went out of the government and NDA. Again in 2004 elections for Lok Sabha, all the 10 seats of Haryana were fielded with candidates but not one candidate got elected.
In the year 2005, when the state elections for the assembly were held, majority was lost by INLD, where it could get only 9 wins while the congress won about 67 seats. But in 2009,, the alliance which was formed by INLD which took 32 seats, which was 23 more in number than previous elections. This gave a political conclusion that the jat votes were retained by INLD. As per the idea of Chautala, Sonia Gandhi, being a foreigner is not suitable for the country.

Famous Members of the Party
Jana Nayak Chaudhary Devilal
Even though Haryana forms a small state in India, a number of distinguished luminaries have been related with the state, who have worked with a position in the political system of India in the 19th as well as in the 20th century. These leaders created a special place for themselves in the religious, social, political, literary, political and agrarian sections of Indian society. It was because of their sincerity in their services that they would create an awakening, making significant contributions towards the freedom movement of India. Sacrificing was their characteristic. Chaudhary Devi Lal was among one of the greatest personalities. He had always been a poor friendly leader and had contributed hugely towards the upliftment and betterment of tenants, peasants and people who were downtrodden.
Chaudhary Devi Lal belonged to that group of Indian national leaders, who were the first generation luminaries, making a link for the transition period from independence struggle to the post independence days.
Devi Lal initially jumped into the independence struggle, after shunning studies and was highly motivated by the ideologies of leaders of freedom movement such as Lala Lajpat Rai, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, etc. He took active part in the Civil Disobedience Movement by Mahatma Gandhi. During this period, he had been to jail for a period of more than 4 years, during his early life.
It was his strong belief that india’s backbone is peasantry. Even though he belonged to a family of landlords, he was of the opinion to give proper treatment to backward classes and tenants, mostly the Dalit people. He led movements favoring land enfranchisement, which were occupied by tenants.
His ideologies were highly influenced by those of Acharya Vinoba Bhave and took part in the Bhoodan Movement. His idea was to bring modernization into agriculture. He wanted to bring in technology, agriculture development, high yield varieties, water conservation and help farmers obtained suitable prices for their produce. When he was the Deputy Prime Minister, with additional portfolio of agriculture, the beginning of National Policy on Agriculture was initiated.
O. P. Chautala
Chaudhary Om Prakash Chautala was born in freedom fighter’s family and struggling for common people’s rights was his inheritance. This duty of his has been performed with best capabilities and diligence and in the process, has even overlooked his family and personal interests so that there would be great good of the society. It was destiny that he was chosen to lead the work which was started by Jana Nayak Chaudhary Devi Lal, who was his father. During this chief ministership, he improved people’s quality of life in Haryana. He had acumen for administration which was appreciated and because of this sharp governance, the state was able to take centre stage in the economic field, which is sure to inspire many leaders of India. Since history is a great judge of every individual, it will be forever marked that Chaudhary Om Prakash Chautala was nothing less than continent’s Bismarck.
It was in 1999, he came into power, at a time when the state was having lawlessness and various corruption and bankruptcy cases along with ineffective rule. At this juncture, he brought in stability and peace and brought about prosperity in the state. Like his hallmark, Chautala was able to bring in industrialization and discipline in the financial field. Being courageous enough to first start VAT in the state, he was appreciated by his adversaries in politics, for his acumen in administrative field.
In another major achievement by Om Prakash Chautala, he went on to fight for getting the river water shares in the supreme court through SYL canal.
