Nivedita Setu
One of the cable bridge constructed over River Hooghly in the city of Kolkata is Nivedita Setu that has also been named as the Second Vivekananda Setu. The bridge had been constructed parallel to the old Vivekananda Setu that was started in the year 1932. The bridge got its name after Sister Nivedita who was a social worker and was a follower of Swami Vivekananda. The bridge has been constructed such that it has the capability of letting almost 48000 vehicles cross over it on regular basis.
American Segmental Bridge Institute of USA awarded this bridge with the Award of Excellence.
This is a toll bridge and as per the records of 2011, light vehicles have to pay Rs 33 for using the bridge while buses and trucks or other heavy vehicles have to pay Rs 65 and Rs 99 to 183 respectively.
Description of the Bridge
Since the old Vivekananda Setu Bridge was ageing, there aroused the need to construct another bridge. This was the reason that Nivedita Setu came into existence.
The real challenge was to make this new Bridge Nivedita Setu such that it does not only save the beauty of the old Vivekananda Setu but also the looks of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple located at a little distance from this bridge.
The other importance of the bridge is that it is the first Bridge had a single profile cable-stayed Bridge in India. The Bridge has been designed such that the height of its column is below the height of the Dakshineswar Temple.
