Koilwar Bridge
The Koilwar Bridge has now been named as the Abdul Bari Bridge. The bridge traverses the River Son. The bridge has been named after Professor Abdul Bari. Abdul Bari was an academician and also a social reformer.
Description
The Koilwar Bridge has a double rail track as well as a two lane road of National Highway, NH 30, along with it. The 1.4 kilometers long steel rail-road bridge was previously considered to be the longest bridge in the Indian subcontinent till 1900. It was later overtaken by the new Upper Son Bridge. A four-lane river road bridge which will span the national highway NH 30 route has been planned parallel to the Koilwar Bridge.
Geography
The Koilwar Bridge is also synonymously referred to as the Son Bridge when it was built. This is why it has been regarded as the older of the longer bridges in this subcontinent. In spite of the work being commissioned in 1856, it was ruptured by uprisings in 1857 and was finally completed in 1862. The bridge was introduced by the then Viceroy Lord Elgin.
Description
The Koilwar Bridge about 4,726 feet was the brainwork of Matthew Digby Wyatt and Sir James Meadows Rendell. It was until 1900 that the bridge remained to be one of the longest bridges in the Indian subcontinent till the bridge was superseded by the Upper Son Bridge. The Railways have said that this is the only link on the river Son which was able to connect Patna and Delhi.
