Goshree Bridges
Relevance of Goshree Bridges must be understood in a different perspective unlike any general bridge. An array of bridges links the mainland Kochi area with three major islands located in the nearby backwaters of northern side. Goshree Bridges are the crucial roadways sources to connect the prominent islands of Bolgatty and Vallarpadam with the mainland. That is why, these bridges are important for road connectivity. One more island in the western side called Vypin is well connected to mainland area through one of these bridges.
First of the series of Goshree Bridges called Bridge No One links Ernakulam with the nearby Bolgatty Islands by roadways. As the Goshree Island Development Authority of Kerala government took the initiative to construct such bridges, they have been named after that. Sale proceeds of reclaimed land near the bridge were used for the financial support to construct these bridges.
It was on December 29, 2000 that the foundation stone was laid for the first bridge. One more connectivity was done between Ernakulam and Bolgatty on December 29, 2003. It was opened for the masses thereafter. Other bridges of the set of Goshree Bridges completed on February 10, 2004 to connect Bolgatty and Vallarpadam. Third of the set of 03 bridges under this plan was completed on March 17, 2004 while the rest bridges were completed for formal operation on June 5, 2004.
