Bandra Worli Sea Link
The Bandra-Worli Seal Link officially known as Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link opened its first four lanes on 30th June 2009 and later on 24th March 2010 all its eight lanes were accessible. Built by Hindustan Construction Company at an expense of Rs. 1600 crores and commissioned by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) reduce the travel time between Bandra and Worli from 60-80 minutes to 20-30 minutes in peak hours.
Geography
The bridge is made over Arabian Sea which is 5.6 kilometers with a width of approximately 66 feet and 413 feet in height. The bridge is an eight lane bridge and is the first Indian cable-stayed bridge to be made over open sea.
Specifications
The foundation of the bridge is 120 reinforced concrete piles of 6.6 feet diameter cables. Each portion of the bridge is supported on piers spaced at 50 meters except the cable-stayed portion. The section also provides a service walk-side. The Bandra cable-stayed channel is 600 meters in length whereas the Worli cable-stayed channel is 350 meters in length.
There is toll of Rs 55 for cars, Rs 80 for LCV and Rs 110 for trucks and buses. The traffic management is done by cameras, automated traffic counters, etc. to ensure safe and fast running of traffic on the bridge. The bridge has been provided a reliable power supply backed up with diesel generator to ensure continuous running of bridge.
