Mahatma Gandhi Setu
Mahatma Gandhi Setu is also at times referred to as the Gandhi Setu or Ganga Setu. It traverses the river Ganges. It was built to connect Hajipur in the north with Patna in the south. The bridge still remains to be the longest river bridge in Asia. The bridge was dedicated to the public in May 1982 by the Prime Minister of India, Mrs Indira Gandhi.
Description
The length of the bridge is about 5,575 meters or roughly 18,291 ft thereby making it to be the longest bridges in the world.
It was in 1968 that the bridge was approved by the Central Government. The bridge was constructed by Gammon India Limited over a period of ten years from 1972 to 1982.
The bridge has been built so that it could easily connect North Bihar with the rest of Bihar.
Engineering Details
The Mahatma Gandhi Setu Bridge has about 45 intermediate spans of 121.065 meters or roughly 397.19 ft each. It also consists of a span which is about 65.530 meters or 214.99 ft at each end. The deck is able to provide for a 7.5 meters or 25 ft wide. The bridge is a two lane roadway which is meant for the 70 R and IRC class loading as it also has footpaths on either side. In order to construct this mega bridge, the method of the cantilever segment was adopted. The bridge is more popularly known as Ganga Setu and is considered to be one of the longest single river bridges in the world.
