Few words about Municipal Corporation in India:
In India, cities with a population of over 200,000 or more are administered by a local government body known as Municipal Corporations, which is administratively a part of a district. It interacts directly with the state government under the Panchayati Raj system.
Municipal Corporation is responsible for keeping records of birth and deaths , roads, public transportations, water supply, drainage and sewage, flood control, public safety services e.g. ambulance & fire services, waste management & Sanity, building maintenance & gardens. The Corporation generates its income from property tax, octroi ( many cities now abolished this service) and usage fees for utilities and entertainment tax.
A Municipal Corporation consists of members elected from the wards of the city, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, who are elected by the members among themselves. It is headed by the Municipal Commissioner, who is from the Indian Administrative Services; he is responsible for implementation of the decisions made by the corporation and prepares the annual budget.
In India currently Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad are the largest Municipal Corporations.
