Sports In India
Used primarily for the purpose of entertaining both, one who participates and one who sees. The sport or sporting activities is an exhaustive term used for any game played with or without the guidance of any rules and regulations, but with the exertion of pressure. Sports can have rivalry in any form with sometimes just two opponents to large numbers or groups of opponents playing opposite each other in groups or head on.
In common parlance, only those deeds that have a tinge of exertion of the body or the ability to use the physique are those that pass the classification of sports in the global sporting world of Olympic Games as well as in the council of Europe. These reject any other type of sports where there can be no specified physical activity.
In spite of many sports being practiced in India, Cricket is clearly the most famous. Hockey has been a lucky game for India with the Hockey players making India proud by winning 8 gold medals in the Olympic Games. India has been a nation that has set the stage for a number of sports, the most common ones being the Asian games in 1951 and 1982, the World Cup Cricket matches in 1987, 1996 and 2011, Afro-Asian Games in 2003 and Hockey World Cup of 2010 and Commonwealth games in 2010. Apart from these, there are series like the Chennai Open, Mumbai Marathon, Delhi Half Marathon and the Indian Masters that have taken place on the Indian soil. With the conduct of Budh International Circuit in 2011 at Greater Noida’s motor circuit in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India created history and got the mark of having hosted a Grand Prix.
Since 1924, India has been conducting the National Games of India. The cricket game of Indian Premier League started in 2008 was also hosted by India. This is next only to the NBA in terms of generation of money going by the reports by the Forbes.
History of Indian Sports
Indian sports have its origin in the Vedic period. The culture of the people ensured a perfect balance between the sporting or physical activities and religion. Going by the principle in the Atharvaveda, people considered to be duty and the benefits or success as two hands. It is interesting to note that the Olympic Oath also has the same principle where the sportsmen strive to make the county and sport proud.
In Great Britain, children used to play a game called Battledore and Shuttlecock in reference to the paddle and the cork with feathers also referred to as the bird. This game is supposedly the genesis of Badminton. On the other hand, India was the birthplace of sports including chess, snakes and ladders, cards, polo that were globalized much later.
The sporting facilities in the capital city were revamped after Delhi hosted the 9th Asian Games in 1982. Taking a leaf out of the books of Delhi, the other major cities in India are also being revamped these days. Apart from this there are also other sporting activities that are being improved independently. Martial arts and wrestling are some examples of sporting activities that developed in the nation after these changes. During the 9th Asian Games, the Indian government also set up the Department of Sports in 1982. This later was renamed as the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports in an effort to celebrate 1985 as the International Youth Year.
Famous Sports in India
Also called soccer, football has the privilege of being the most famous game of the world. This is played in 93 countries and a total of 208 teams. FIFA – the International Federation of Association Football is by far the biggest and the stylish sporting series globally, though it sees the countries of Europe battle it out. There are 19 series of the world cup which have gone through and Brazil is clearly in control with 5 titles to its credit. When the world cup is in progress, nothing else happens in Europe and the people only keep tracking these matches. It is a great surprise that Europe’s most loved game had its origin in China. The literature dating between 1st and 3rd century talks of a game called Cuju which is about kicking the ball. It later spread to countries like Japan and Korea.
Cricket, which is India’s favorite game, is actually the national game of England. It is supposed to have come into existence in the 16th century. The genesis of this game can be traced back to the Creag which was a game that Prince Edward preferred. International cricket is played in 11 countries in three different methods including Test, One day international and T-20 format. The cricket fans applaud and give a god like status to their players when cricketers win matches but criticize them beyond a point when they lose. The rules and the regulations of Cricket are formulated by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and there are 104 countries in this grouping. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most recent addition to the cricketing fanfare. This is proving to be fetching a lot of money for the BCCI.
Basketball is more famous in countries like USA & Canada, Argentina, Spain, Russia and China. The International Basketball Federation or the FIBA sets the rules governing the game. National Basketball Association or NBA with its 30 teams tops the list of richest and famous basketball leagues globally. The marking glory of a basketball event is winning gold at the Olympics. Until today, USA has the highest number of Olympics Gold and this game had its birth in North America.
Hockey is played on grassy terrain and is characterized by the hard ball and in spite of being quite a common sport in the countries in Asia, is also played in Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. India and Pakistan share the national game of Hockey and the FIH or the International Hockey Federation sets the rules of the game. Though field hockey is common, there are other types including the Ice hockey, Street Hockey, Sledge Hockey, Roller Hockey and Inline Hockey. The traces of the game are found in the Greek literatures dating back to 600 BC.
In comparison to Soccer, hockey and Cricket, Baseball is a less played game and follows the rules set by International Baseball Federation or IBAF. Baseball is almost synonymous with the New York Yankees a famous soccer club. Baseball is the National Pastime Game in America and MLB or the Major League Baseball is a top global league. Though based on the game Rounders played in Britain and Flanders, Baseball can be traced back to have originated in North America.
